Zentangle Diva’s Challenge #235 – YIkes! Is that a Flea!?! Edition

Zentangle Diva Challenge #235

[Zentangle? What? Who? Need answers? Start here.]

Like many others, the Zentangle Diva’s family finished their first week of school. Her little sons seem off to a good start except that the fist week of school is a great time for germ sharing. Her little one already has some health challenges, so here’s hoping his immune system can cope with the onslaught.

Her challenge for this week is a simple one—to draw parallel lines across a tile and to use that as our string. Actually, she didn’t exactly say “parallel lines”, but that’s what my little constrained brain interpreted, so that’s what I did. At least I varied their width—-progress. This left me needing to come up with 6 different tangles. I guess I could have repeated some, which actually might have looked interesting, but I didn’t so—maybe I’ll try that later while I watch the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Atlanta Falcons tonight in their first regular season game. (For the uninitiated, this is the start of the American football season.) Feel free to point out my self indulgence in wishful thinking. The weekly mantra around our house during the football season is: “It’s only a game. It’s only a game.”

Here’s what I came up with:

Zentangle Diva Challenge #235

From top to bottom: Segundo(?), Sand Swirl, Phirst, Betweed, a YAHish Hollibaugh and Cubine.

Dino Baby Boomer dog

Dino hoping he’ll feel better after a nap.

Speaking of self-indulgence, two of the six tangles are my own. “Phirst” has the blessing of Linda Farmer of TanglePatterns.com. The other, “Segundo“, is awaiting her verdict. However, I thought I’d also crowd source it. The unimaginatively named “Segundo” (it means “second” in Spanish) is the top row. Have I re-invented the wheel?

As for the fleas—–poor Dino had a tough Saturday: 1) he had a grooming appointment, 2) it was discovered he has fleas, 3) he is very upset that he now looks like a poodle (he’s a cockapoo and considers poodles to be foo foo); and, 4) he heard thunder. I need to explain that I am not a bad dog mother. He was beset by fleas despite having monthly flea prophylaxis treatments. Apparently, Brigantine fleas are their own species or something. This is our last full week in Brigantine. I don’t intend for any fleas to be hitching a ride when we return to Philadelphia.

Have you seen “Segundo” before? Do you allow the success or failure of your preferred sports team affect your mood for the rest of the week? Any flea eradication recommendations that won’t kill the dog and/or his owner?

Great idea to vary the widths of the stripe. I say that because I did that also 🙂 You were more adventurous with your choice of tangles though, which are clear and well drawn. Sorry, I don’t have any flea cures, hope they stay with the dog and don’t transfer to humans.

So far, the fleas seem to prefer canine blood.

Your tile looks great! ^_^ Segundo looks quite interesting…I’ll try using it if I ever get around to doing this week’s challenge. I’d stick in something witty here, but school is making me tired… ^_^

Come back and say something witty after a nap. Just kidding. I hope you’re having a good school year.

Love your tile and congrats on Phirst! I hope the nasty fleas stay gone. Enjoy the start of football. I’m a baseball girl so am embroiled in the end of season hopes. Can they do it in an odd year? (My SF Giants have won the world series the last 3 even years)

Notwithstanding occasional flashes of brilliance, I can’t say I enjoyed the first game of the Eagles’ season. 🙁

I like this. You are right. She didn’t say parallel lines. And she hollibaughed hers. Well that’s fine. I like the ones we did. Like you say, great minds!

I love your Hollibaugh with the dots in it!!!!! A lovely tile. I have not seen Segundo before and I don’t have a favorite sport team. Sorry 🙂

You’re lucky you don’t have a favorite sports team, especially a favorite Philadelphia sports team. 😉

I like the patterns you chose and I think it was a good idea to use parallel lines because the tile is so nice balanced and I looked a long time to it. Lovely work and wonderful contrast and shading 🙂

Firstly, commiserations to Dino – and you – as I can’t tell you enough how much I hate fleas, because fleas love me! Can I change the subject rapidly.

The first thing that hit me when I saw your tile was, (ironically) Segundo! Love it, never seen it and was fascinated by it. Segundo was the name of my husband’s grandfather ( and his wife was Segunda!) so I like the name as I remember him with great fondness.

And I like the parallel stripes too!

Axxx

Sorry to bring up the fleas. I wonder if Segundo and Segunda were the second children in their families.

Nice tile, Suzanne! Segundo and Phirst are my favorites here, but they all go well together.

Thanks for your kind words about Phirst and Segundo. I actually think I like the Betweed and YAH/Holligbaugh. I think Yah gives Hollibaugh an Arabic look.

Nice choice of tangles! And thanks for sharing Segundo and Phirst. Both look interesting.

It’s stacked up really nicely! Every bit of space used so well. And such great ways you stretched those tangles! Sarah

kewl! I didn’t know phirst was yours! I saw it briefly, skipping around on Tanglepatterns. Congrats! I’ve never seen segundo anywhere, so claim it…a NEW PATTERN!

It’s a terrific tile. Reminds me of paleontology or geology or something.

As for flea treatment, a little old lady told me one time that feeding them B vitamins does something to make them less tasty (the pets, not the fleas) Hope you find a way through it.

When we lived in Mexico, my mother was being eaten alive by mosquitoes and someone told her to take B vitamins to discourage them. That was in 1964 so I don’t remember whether it worked. I’ve submitted Segundo to Linda Farmer. We’ll see what she says.

Two great tangles that you have come up with. Can’t wait to see the step outs for Segundo! Hint Hint! good luck with the flea situation.

I have the step outs for Segundo hidden deep in my blog until Linda Farmer of TanglePatterns tells me she thinks it’s a new tangle. However, if you want to see the step outs I came up with along with some Segundo tangleations, you can do so here: http://www.boomeresque.com/boomeresques-second-tangle-invention-segundo/

I think we may be related. I read Segundo and looked at the second row. Of course, that was Sand Swirl, and I wondered what you were thinking LOL! Actually, it looks like a new tangle to me and a nice one too. Poor doggie. Hard to be a pet mom sometimes. Must be kind of like when kids come home from school with lice. Now my head itches! Back to tangling; I read straight lines in my head too! Nice sampler.

Every once in awhile, I look at the poor dog and start feeling itchy myself and then I think about lice too. Yuck!

Great tile! I love the pattern choices. Congrats on “Phirst”! I don’t think I’ve seen anything like “Segundo” around, so hopefully it will meet tanglepatterns criteria and be published soon.

Beautiful tile! I especially like the second pattern from the bottom!

Well My comment was going to be that I liked the two patterns that I hadn’t seen before and then I discover that they are all your own work Woowoo. Love ’em both. (And the tile too.)
With regard to early May next year, our calendar is free and will hopefully remain so, as we are away before and after that, so your organisational skills are admirable.
We only live about an hour and a half away from Birmingham, so it’ll be easy for me to get down to you or vice versa.

Nice choice of tangles – I really like the Sand Swirls – I’ve never seen that one before. I guess chosen for one of your last week’s at the beach?

Suzanne, I have to laugh about your thinking on the stripes! I, too, am Literal Girl, so my tendency is to do just what you did! I think we are birds of a feather! That said, I love your choice of tangles, and in this case, I love the little scale of your Cubine. It really has a different look when it becomes more a texture than windows. I MUST, MUST try your Phirst. It is so cute and eye-catching! I have not used Segundo, but it looks fun and I love the name! Even though you have used very different patterns in this tile, it has a unified look due to your unique drawing style. I love it! Sorry your poochie Dino has to endure such humiliation! I love how pets express all their very “human” feelings without words. They really do get it, don’t they?
