Zentangle Diva Challenge #219 – “Down the Shore” in Brigantine, New Jersey Edition

by Suzanne Fluhr on May 25, 2015 · 31 comments

Sunset over Saint George's Thoroughfare, Brigantine Beach, New Jersey

[Zentangle?? Huh?? What??  Read about it here.]

This week, the Zentangle Diva, Laura Harms, challenged us to produce a tile using only straight lines — maybe a little ironic the week after Irish citizens voted by a large margin to amend their Constitution to provide for marriage equality. 😉

My first thought was to do a mono-tangle tile using just Paradox since that is a straight line tangle which paradoxically produces a curvi-linear look. Then I decided that was too obvious, so I ended up with a sampler of straight line tangles, tangleations and maybe a few figments of my imagination inventions.

Zentangle Diva's challenge #219

Brigantine Beach, New Jersey has wide, soft, sandy beaches

Brigantine has wide, soft sandy beaches.

Some of you know I’ve been quite peripatetic lately. I’m not home today, but I’m a lot closer than Turkey, Israel, Spain or Miami. I’m in Brigantine, New Jersey, where we go to escape the Philadelphia summer muggies. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day here in the United States, Philadelphians are known to engage in a mass exodus “down the shore” to the southern New Jersey beach towns. Permanent residents of these towns even have a not entirely flattering name for us — “shoobies“.

The New Jersey shore might not have the same exotic reputation as the Costa Brava, Tel Aviv or South Beach in Miami, but for us, going there does not involve any interactions with the TSA as it’s only an hour drive from home and it has its beautiful moments. I’ll be tangling here as much as possible this summer.

Brigantine sunsets are ………      In this case, a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

Lovely straight tangles and even lovelier photos of the Jersey shore at sunset! As a native outside-Philadelphian, I can relate to your reference to Shoobies, and have always summered at the Jersey shore.

i like your many figments of your imagination! Straight lines are used very imaginatively.

I am a New Jerseyan myself, live up in North Jersey. I try to make to Brigantine once a year for bird watching. NJ Audubon does many bird trips around that area during summer and fall. It is really quite wondeful.

Think there will be a lot of “sampler” tile. Your put them together well. Like the pictures of the sunset. Would be relaxing to be there.

Very nice tile – love the sampler idea! I actually did a tile this week as well, but it was a little shaky after taking a few weeks’ break from tangling… still, glad I got it done and will be posting it tomorrow. Lovely sunset photos – sounds like a beautiful place to which to escape.

Beautiful tile! I love it that you’ve used so many patterns but still managed to keep it clean and nice!

I love the combination of tangles you chose, it’s a great composition.

It does look like a quilt sampler – very nicely done!

Wonderful straight lines tile! I like the composition and the patterns you chose 🙂
Hihi – I also had the idea to use only Paradox, but then I decided to tangle something else 😉
Great photographs!

I really like your straight line sampler. So many things happening in both your tile and your life. Enjoy your summer spot – it looks beautiful!

You are right – there are no words for those sunsets – oh my gosh they’re breathtaking!! Are the sunrises as beautiful?

Suzanne Fluhr May 26, 2015 at 11:56 pm

I’m a night owl, do I don’t “do” sunrises very often.

You made a great sampler with your tile. Good for reference, I think. You brought tears to my eyes as I looked at the pictures of the Jersey shore. I grew up with that trip each summer and I miss it so very much. Think of me as you breath in that special scent of salt water and sun lotion and listen to the sounds of the waves, gulls, and children laughing.

I love your Tile, Suzanne. It is so interesting how a pattern can create different tones in a piece. Your Tile shows that wonderfully. I really like the row of Paradox on the bottom of your Tile. Beautiful effect, and so well drawn.

I hope you get to spend a lot of time in Brigantine this summer. It sounds and looks wonderful. We don’t have a second home and are tied to Monday/Friday-at-noon work schedules in the summer. We spend as much of our off-time as possible exploring the Oregon, Washington and British Columbia shorelines and at least one late-summer week in a cabin on Wallowa Lake, a gem at the foot of the Wallowa Mountains in the northeast corner of Oregon.

Looks like you rose to the straight line challenge very well! Lovely! Brigantine looks super lovely too! What a great spot to spend the summer months. I used to go to Northern Wisconsin..Door County. I still miss it so much. I think I saw some of the most beautiful sunsets of my life there. But your pictures are beautiful! Maybe the sunsets in Brigantine are as lovely:)

Neat! It’s fun doing a sampler, and you’ve created a lovely one here. There must be something about working inside of restrictions that lends itself to creativity, for you may have invented new patterns here. Amazing paradox along the bottom.

I love your sampler…it reminds me of the log cabin quilt block design! Each tangle is done so well too, because even though each line is straight each portion has motion and curving going on! Very cool!

Nice tile. it looks like a printed fabric, a headscarf.

Had to look up ‘peripatetic’. As well as ‘Zentangle’. You’ve got mad writing skillz and looks like you can doodle I mean tangle with the best of them. Thanks for two new nuggets of knowledge today.

Suzanne, your tile is lovely as are the figments, I mean, inventions, you spun into it. I can’t lie, I have Jersey shore envy. Thank you for sharing it photographically!

I love your sampler, looks like a mini quilt. You managed to do so many tangles in there and they are so well done…great work! Love the sunset photos you took, the colors in them are all of my most favorite colors, nice and soft and relaxing. Ok, I’m officially jealous since I have only been to a beach maybe twice in my life…I live in the mountains.

My special summer place? The Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, Maryland. I’ve vacationed there every summer for over a decade, and my son and daughter-in-law were married there. (In an outdoor wedding by the water with both a chuppa and Bichons!) Can’t wait to return this July.

AHHHH, Brigantine! My mum would only take us there in winter as the crowds drove her crazy. In winter, she/we cleared our heads out with the brisk sea air and hot beverages in the car. In summer we always drove down to Ocean City to roam the boardwalk until my teens, then it was Ogunquit, Maine for serious sun, salt and sand. Married, I lived on Cape Cod and did my best to avoid those “shoobies,” though we didn’t call them that.
Here in Arizona, my backyard is as good as any resort: pool, spa and refreshing beverages on the patio. Fresh fruit most of the year. What’s not to like?!
Thanks for sharing the photos, Suzanne! Nicely drawn tile, too. Have a brilliant day! c
