Hump Day Zentangle® Challenge #18 – We’re Baaaack From Around the World and InaFlux Edition

Philadelphia Fall Foliage

I’m glad we didn’t miss all the fall foliage in Philadelphia during our springtime sojourn Down Under.

We’re baaaack home in Philadelphia after our 5 week around the world trip. Our last travel day was a long one from Sydney, Australia (13 hours) to San Francisco, and from San Francisco back home to Philly (5 hours)—not counting the waiting around airports time.

Our last flight back home was on American Airlines, the airline on which we started our trip with less than smooth sailing. However, fortunately, our last flight on American Airlines was much less challenging than our first. The flight was delayed only for an hour leaving San Francisco, but since Philadelphia was our final stop, that was not a problem for us. For some of our fellow passengers trying to make connecting flights, it was a bigger deal.

What was freaky about our last travel day was that we landed in San Francisco before we took off from Sydney. I wish I could tell you that I understand the International Date Line, but that would be a lie. (Perhaps I was attracted to the tangle InaFlux for today’s challenge partly because that’s how my brain still feels after crossing the International Date Line and 15 time zones on our last travel day (daze). )

Seat back map on airplane

It can feel a little daunting when you see this on your seat back screen and know that this is only the 1st flight of your travel day.

Our trip included 13 flights. It was supposed to be 11, but first we had our 12 hour flight to nowhere.  Later during the trip, we went to check in online for a flight from Sofia, Bulgaria to Ljubljana, Slovenia, only to learn that our airline (Adria) had declared bankruptcy and was no longer flying. This caused us to have to cancel our trip to Slovenia because we had to be in Zurich to fly from there to Singapore on an already booked flying day that ended in Perth, AustraliaI guess the moral of the story is that travelers need to expect the unexpected.

I took this photo as we flew over San Francisco Bay to land at SFO.

Despite our occasional travel misadventures, it was a wonderful trip about which I plan to be writing more.  We spent time on the Greek island of Crete, in Athens, in Bulgaria, in Zurich (Switzerland), and in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney (Australia).

Everywhere we could, we visited a botanical garden. Last week I shared some photos from the Western Australian Botanical Garden. It’s still spring in Australia (being Down Under and all), so we also visited gardens in Melbourne and Sydney.

This week’s “the day after” Hump Day Zentangle challenge is still inspired by flowers.

Hump Day Zentangle® Challenge #18 – InaFlux Deconstructed by Debbie E. New, CZT

If Zentangle is a new concept for you, you can read more about it here.

While I was still in a floral state of mind, I came across InaFlux, a “new” to me tangle I’ve been wanting to try. (Pun sort of intended because InaFlux was deconstructed by Debbie E. New, CZT—get it?). Debbie is a Singapore based CZT who was a classmate in the Certified Zentangle Teacher training seminar number 18 in Providence, Rhode Island in April of 2015. Unfortunately, I had not yet met Debbie when we visited Singapore in 2014.

Debbie shares the step outs for InaFlux and some ideas for tangleations on her blog, Tangled Pursuits. The link is to the page where Debbie shares all the tangles she has deconstructed in alphabetical order.

I’ve also been playing around with tangling on black paper with a white gelly roll pen, and then adding some color, but that is not part of this week’s challenge. This week’s challenge is to do a composition using InaFlux, either by itself or with other tangles. You can also choose to strictly use the Zentangle method or produce a Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA) composition, using Inaflux.

Zentangle Tangle Inaflux

I used an 01 White Sakura Gelly Roll pen on a 6 x 6 inch black Strathmore Bristol Vellum “Artist Tile”. I find that the Strathmore Bristol Vellum handles gelly roll ink better than the “official” black tiles from the Zentangle Mother Ship. I used Inaflux and PokeLeaf.

Since I was already in Zia-Land, I decided to add color using Premier Prismacolor pencils.

I could probably do more with shading. Oh well—next time.

I look forward to seeing what you do with Debbie’s InaFlux. I like the way the tangle itself provides a 3D effect even without shading.

Welcome home! I’m looking forward to all you write and show us about your trip (and have very much enjoyed what I’ve read about it so far). But first, take your time recovering from the vagaries of a very long day flying (and frequently drink as much water as you can).

Thank you! I’m ready for another trip although I suppose I should at least wait until I get through the mail that accumulated while we were away.

It’s a reflection on the state of air travel when you think of your hour-late flight as the good one. Welcome back.
