Zentangle Diva’s Challenge #203 – “Get Me Outta Here” Edition

by Suzanne Fluhr on February 2, 2015 · 28 comments

(If you are sitting there scratching your head and wondering, Zen—what? who?, you may want to start here for my take on it (prior to my upcoming training to be a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) after which my take is likely to change.)

It’s the first Monday of the month, so this week is a “UMT”  (Use My Tangle) challenge. The Zentangle Diva, Laura Harms, asked us to use a new tangle, Athitzi, by contributor Eleanor Holt in our tile composition. Although this tangle is “simple” to draw, it does demand patience (lots and lots of parallel lines) which, for some reason, I was sorely lacking today. You can read about the challenge, find a link to the step outs for Athitzi and see some photos of Laura’s adorable sons by clicking here.

To even further make myself crazy test myself, the other tangles I chose also required lots of lines. In addition to Athitza, I used the tangles Rick’s Paradox, Sand Swirls, Fescu, Phicops and one I don’t know the name of, basically undulating lines with sparkles. I used Perfs to try to bring some order to the plethora of lines.

I could have gotten away without using any color, but it has been so gray here in Philadelphia this winter that I decided to break out some red and gray. I realize that friends and relatives who live further north are adding a foot plus of snow today on top of the 2 feet from the last winter storm, so I’ll stop whining now.

Here’s my Athitzi tile:

Zentangle Diva's Weekly Challenge #203 Athitza

There’s a good chance I won’t be able to participate in next week’s challenge because I’ll be on a cruise ship somewhere in the Caribbean. This is a “get me outta here” cruise. Cruise ships have really slow wifi, so it’s unlikely I’ll be uploading any graphics. I consider Zentangle and Zentangle Inspired Art to be a getaway for the mind. But, sometimes, and especially in February, my body is also demanding a trip to somewhere warm.

Meanwhile, if a virtual getaway would be of any interest to you, you can click here to see what I had to say about Malaga, Spain in my last blog post.

Are you planning a February getaway? (I realize that for those Down Under, this would be a summer getaway).

Well I have to say it was worth it. Those flashes of red add some excitement and I think you have mixed some really good patterns. I really do understand your need for warmth and relaxation and I hope you have a great time.

Your combination with all the other line-patterns is really great! I love the composition of your tile and your colour in it 🙂
I wish you a wonderful “get me outta here” cruise and I would also like to go somewhere where it’s warm… 😉

Nice line work and color and the addition of the fescu softens and surprises. Being one of those northern cousins who’s been buried in snow and snowstorms this week, your getaway cruise sounds like a slice of heaven. Enjoy it for all of us who are still looking at the thermometer and thinking “Wow, it’s almost 2 degrees, warming right up!”…

Cruise ships have really slow Wi-Fi. Who knew? Next week as I’m stoicly enduring the icey Philadelphia February cold, I’ll think of you blissfully cruising through the Caribbean, working on fabulous Zentangles. Have a good cruise!

Enjoy your cruise. Anywhere warm sounds super appealing right now.

Great work and a lovely complex combination. Enjoy your cruise and don’t forget to take plenty tangling supplies with you…can’t think of anything better than sailing into the sunset with a tile on your knee and maybe a glass of something nice!

Very lovely tile for this week! You gave yourself a work out out with all those lines, for all the tangles. I really think the perfs helped highlight the areas and the touch of red is great. Have a wonderful cruise!

I really like how you incorporated Athitzi into your tile. I had a tough time with it – it’s definitely not as easy as it might look at first!

Great Tile, the use of a little color really makes a difference. Also I like how the black beads are forming borders of the spaces you tangled. Like it 🙂

Suzanne! WOW! You may have just changed my mind on this tangle. You did a great job on this challenge. Maybe it’s in need of surrounding lines as you did it? Not sure, but… Enjoy your little get away!

This must have taken you almost forever! I love it though, especially the sparkle and the red and purple. Have a wonderful trip.

poor Suzanne…going on a cruise with slow Wi-Fi… hahahaaha! I love your tile. That striped phicops sort of thing is VERY cool, and the spinning out of the athitzi is wonderful. It kind of reminds me of some little alien snail creature, hiding in some little dip in the meadow grass. He’s peeking out from the corner! Nice work. I like it a lot.

This is a lovely tile, I love the tangles you’ve put together and the way you’ve composed them too. The fescue look brilliant especially- I’m jealous I feel I’ve never managed to do much with that one. : )

Thanks, Lucy. I’ve just started being able to use it myself. It only recently “clicked” for me.

Lovely tile! And the line work is perfection. The splash of red is just what was needed in this beauty. Great job and have a great cruise!

This one is gorgeous like all of them that you do, Suzanne. Good call on using the red to give some contrast to the dreary winter weather 🙂
