Zentangle Diva's challenge #202 Chebucto and Copada

(If you are sitting there scratching your head and wondering, Zen—what? who?, you may want to start here for my explanation of what Zentangle is and how I became addicted.)

Zentangle Diva's challenge #202 Chebucto and CopadaThis week, the Zentangle Diva, Laura Harms, challenged us to produce a “DuoTangle” using only two tangles by Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) Laura Bremner, chebucto and copada. (You can read Laura’s instructions, find links to the tangles, and see other challenge responses here.)

I admit that I had a bit of trouble conquering these two tangles and I’m not positive I exactly have them under control well enough to use them regularly yet. They do lend themselves to use in borders, so I hope I’ll come up to speed with them with some more practice.

It has taken me pretty much all day to finish my DuoTangle tile because here in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, we’re hunkered down awaiting snowmageddon — a nor’easter coastal storm named Juno. Fortunately, Philadelphia, where we live, is 60 miles inland, but the projection models have us on the edge of the winter storm warning area. So, of course, I allowed the storm hype to interrupt my tangling to get to the store and to make a pot of home-made chicken soup. (I suspect my Canadian friends are snickering).

Snowmageddon 2015 - Winter Storm Juno

Waiting for Winter Storm Juno

Last year on this date, we were on a cruise ship pulling in to dock in Bangkok, Thailand, where yours truly was whining about the heat and humidity. We then spent the rest of the winter living in Honolulu, Hawaii where my husband did a three month sabbatical. What a difference a year makes!

PS: If you’re going to do a sabbatical in Hawaii and you live in the northeastern United States, by all means, do it during the winter months!

27 Jan 2015   Addendum:  Snowmageddon in Philly turned out to be about 2 inches of the white stuff. Yesterday, they preemptively closed schools and city government offices. Oops. I guess it’s better safe than sorry. #WeatherPredictionFail

What’s it like outside where you live? If you’re a tangler and you did this challenge, how did you fare with Chebucto and Copada?

I love what you did with copada across the top of this tangle! the little bracket shapes and orbs add a lot of interest. It is so crown-like. Regal.

Thank you, Heidi Sue. You are too kind. 🙂

Margaret Bremner did a great job designing this weeks DuoTangle patterns. I, too, had a very hard time with Chebucto. Copada was a lot more cooperative. I love how you combined the two of these patterns into a delightful curved design. Well done. (Outside our house is hazy, clear skies, and cold. No snow in the forcast. Perfect Soup and Grilled Cheeze Sandwich weather.)

I like your variations on these tangles. Here in Holland is was very wet yesterday (I was sodden after a bicycle ride of less then 10 minutes) , temperature just above zero (C).
Keep warm and safe!

I like the composition of your tile!

The storm went further out to sea than originally forecast, so we in Philadelphia received only a few inches of snow. A lot of places, including the city government, courts, schools and the airlines were preemptively closed. Oops, but better safe than sorry IMHO.

Hi Suzanne, I really like this piece. The curves and the 3D and the pattern in a pattern, all quite complex and no-one would know you’d had an issue with either of the patterns. Me? I too am having a bit of a battle with Copada, although I like it a lot. I can’t get those curves even and regular. I resorted to a ruler at one point with Chebucto and feel I am now getting to grips with it. Fingers crossed, my tile will be on there tonight.

As for the weather here, too cold and damp to hang the washing out but not too bad really. Threatened with snow tomorrow but the freezer is full, the heating is on and I don’t have to be anywhere, so I just don’t care!

That’s how I feel about the snow too, but when I was a full time lawyer, snow days made me nuts, especially if I had to be in court.

I really like your tile! It’s great how you tangled Copada. I had problems to do a duotangle with those two patterns, especially I didn’t really get Chebucto I think…
Your tile is really wonderful 🙂

Pining for the warmth of Hawaii must be an understatement. Stay warm and safe.

I went through a couple of tiles before I got what I was trying to do to happen. You really can’t let your mind wander with some tangles. I like your composition and the patterns turned out nicely. I am ashamed to say that I was whining yesterday because it was overcast and under 70 degrees. I love the heat (I don’t even mind the 110+ degrees) and I don’t know how you, in the cold country, live with it. I lived there for 20 years and was cold all the time 🙂 Stay safe!

Jean, as we get older, the idea of becoming snowbirds becomes more and more attractive. Of course, one of us still has a day job, so it might be awhile.

Very beautiful variations of chebucto and copada. We feld the same way about the patterns, but yours is nice.

Quinn, now that you mention it, it does look like a Hershey’s Kiss—-and now I want one too!

This one does look like it could be difficult! But you managed it beautifully! Hope you have dug out, though it seems your area didn’t get the expected Snowmageddon Have to laugh at all the pre-emptive closings! It’s snow people!!!!! Cold here in SC, but sunny. I’ll take that!

Thanks, Jacquie. Not much shoveling going on in Philly after the snowbust of January 2015. Maybe a little sweeping, but that’s about it. 🙂

I really like the perspective and the way the edges of the Copada stand out…great shading and a nice concept. Anywhere warm sounds nice right now. We got about 18″ but that’s a lot better than the 30″ they were predicting. Today the sun is shining, it’s 10 degrees and the snow shovel beckons. Keep warm…nice tile!

GREAT tile!!!!! It looks so intricate and complex. I love the tangleations. We got some snow…want some? 🙂 Not as much as they predicted but there are drifts that are 5 feet high.

Reply

Suzanne Fluhr January 28, 2015 at 6:07 pm

Um, no thanks, you can keep your snow drifts. But thanks for asking.

Love the sparkle and shading in your tile. I also like how it reminds me of arabic patterns. Great work.

Your pattern is great. I just came to know about Zentangle and then read more on wiki etc. It is so nice to create something amazing without keeping final shape in mind but go with the flow where the lines, strings and patterns take you.

All the best with your creations. I will also try to do it some day soon as I always draw patterns on hands and papers.
Thank you for introducing me with this technique.

Your large Copada reminds me of a Hershey Kiss. We may in the same situation in IN this weekend. Depending on which forecast model you look at we could get anything from > 2″ to 12″ of snow. Should be fun.

There’s a replay for us too for Monday into Tuesday—-rain or a foot of snow. It’s hard to know how to prepare. I guess the best Monday plan is to stay inside and work on the next Diva’s challenge.

Oh, p.s., in Phoenix we hoped to showcase our lovely winter weather for the golfers and Super Bowl guests, but we have had some rare rainy crummy weather. So much for public relations!

Love your work today! It reminds me of a turret in a mosque…someplace you have traveled to on one of your adventures. I struggled with chebucto too….I had to lean on the expert…Wayne had to show me three different ways of drawing it and I finally had the light dawn. Not sure about the couples therapy and zentangle…the success of our marriage is that he has the patience of a saint. LOL! Hope you weathered the storm. I grew up in South Dakota with many blizzards experienced as a child, but my adult life has all been in So. Calif. so we have been quite spoiled this winter. But I agree about Hawaii…I have spent more than a year of my life doing business there and most of it was in August through September…way too hot that time of year. I love it none-the-less. If you do certification which one will you do Suzanne?
