Zentangle Diva Challenges 272 & 273 -Celebrate the 4th in Philly Edition –

by Suzanne Fluhr on June 28, 2016 · 16 comments

To those of you who noticed my absence from the Zentangle Diva’s challenge last week, thank you. šŸ˜‰ Not to worry. I am in good health and still recovering from our big move to “The Cave”. Indeed, I’m sitting here at noon with every light in the apartment on. Granted it’s a dismal day weather-wise, but I’ll not let that interfere with a good whining (whinging for my UK & British Commonwealth friends) opportunity.

I did actually do last week’s challenge, “Black, White & Red All Over”. So, never one to want to let work go to waste, I’ll share that effort. Sadly, it also occurs to me that the generation currently being born might not understand that old riddle we thought was hilarious when we were age 7. “What’s black, white and red (read) all over?”

What's Black, White and Red All Over?

What’s Black, White and Red All Over? Tangles used: Pokeberry, Pokeleaf, Tripoli, my own Aloha, and the round one with the circles in the middle. I deconstructed an African cloth design someone shared, somewhere. Has anyone seen it elsewhere? Does it have a name?

Moving quickly on to this week’s challenge which was to “finish” a tile we started in the past and maybe even thought was finished. I honestly don’t remember when I did the first version of the tile I’m sharing, but I’ve finished it (again) by shading it, adding a border and a little gratuitous orb which some might graciously choose to interpret as a sun or moon.

This was the original composition.

This was the original composition.

And here’s what it turned into:

My travel blogging share this week is from my piece on the Huffington Post blog, Five Reasons to Celebrate the Fourth of July in Philadelphia. It really is a great time to visit my hometown. (Any comments you leave on the Huffington Post are most welcome as are any you leave here below. You have to be logged into Facebook to comment on the Huffington Post.)

We will soon be celebrating the Fourth of July here in the United States. It marks the day we declared independence from Great Britain — sort of an Amerexit, so to speak. Ours worked out pretty well eventually, although there were those Ā gruesome American Revolutionary War and Civil War things.

If you’re an American or in the USA, where will you be celebrating the Fourth of July?

I like your tile of challenge number 272 very much; those colours are so nice, the composition is well chosen and your Aloha is really beautiful!
For 273: the adding of Tipple and AKoya as a border was a very good idea!

Lovely work! Your 1st Diva piece is great. I love that pattern you deconstructed. The Akoya border around #2 spiffs it up quite nicely.

Lovely work! Your Remix looks ‘finished’ this way, well done!

Love both the tiles and relieved to hear that your move has gone well…or as well as can be expected. As to your question, I will enjoy the many fireworks that I can see from my balcony poised over Charleston Harbor. Always a delight! Happy 4th!

Dear God, Suzanne, I hope your reference to civil war and the like isn’t prophetic. Things are bad enough here as it is! I like your remix, the more experienced you does show, doesn’t it? As for sitting with the lights on, is it the weather or the apartment that’s dark? The way you talk, I see the next move as imminent!

The apartment is dark because it doesn’t get much daylight. It only has windows on one side and those are on an inner courtyard, so by noon, the 2 feet of sunlight are gone. Other than that, I like the apartment and it is definitely much more quiet than the construction central we moved away from. I really need to stop whining. I can spend most of the summer “down the shore” where there is plenty of sunlight.

One day a young student walked through the office. Upon seeing the typewriter, he asked what it was. The secretary told him she used it to type out check. “Oh, cool”, he said. “A machine just for checkwriting.” Yes, the next generation will have no idea what a newspaper is.
Your tiles are very nice. Funny that the shape/style is almost the same for the two.
You are sounding a bit depressed with the new digs. Color. You need color!
Our 4th will be spent trying to calm our huge dog who is terrified of the noise that fireworks make. Since fireworks are now legal here in AZ, fireworks will start on Friday night and continue through Monday night šŸ™

Our dog is not going to be happy about the fireworks either. He’s petrified of thunder too. BTW, your secretary needs to get a check writing program so she can write and print checks from her computer. If that’s integrated into a bookkeeping program—that’s even better. Pretty soon, no one will know what a check is either and actual cash money will be the next thing to go.

I may have misinterpreted the challenge. I used the same tile. I just went on a “finished” it.

We too will be helping our two dogs get through the terror caused by the sound of fireworks. Fortunately, most fireworks are illegal in our city, but there still are public fireworks displays, and their sounds bother most dogs (and many combat veterans) terribly.

I like the frame you created around your Remix piece, it’s nicely grounded. Funny, we live in a dungeon! It’s a welcome relief from the unrelenting sunshine, but boy is it dark in here….we’ll be home this year–grill something, drink some yummy stuff, wave some flags. Nothing too crazy. And we found a local deli carries Taylor pork roll. We are in heaven with a taste of Philly. Cheryl

We’re “down the shore” this weekend where our house has plenty of sunshine. I’m still hoping I can get used to the cave. When I go outside from our new condo, I’m always surprised to see that it’s still day time.

Suzanne, I love both of your tiles this week. Your Black, White and Red is a nice mix of color and tangles. They work so well together. Your remix tile looked fine before you added to it, but I think that your additions were spot on and really made the tile! Great work and I hope you enjoy the new place. My cats are going to be hiding under the bed on the 4th like they always do. I have 3 and they don’t like fireworks OR thunder either. Have a great 4th!

Love your Black and White and Red All Over tile. Also the new finish of your older tile is fun.

I will be celebrating the 4th in my backyard. The city I live in does a fireworks display at the park just downhill from us so we sit with our Sangrias and enjoy the show in the comfort of our own patio!
