Zentangle Diva Challenges ##256 and 257 – Catching Up After a Trip to Hawaii Edition

[If Zentangle is a new concept for you, I’d suggest starting with this post, explaining the Zentangle method and copping to my Zentangle addiction.]

I missed posting my response to a Zentangle Diva’s weekly challenge for the first time last week. In my defense, we were traveling in Hawaii (the islands of Maui and Oahu), so although I actually did the challenge, I didn’t get my act together to write a blog post. The more laconic pace of life in Hawaii is apparently contagious.

We were challenged to do a duotangle using tangles the Diva named after her two sons: BooKee and Artoo. (I’m pretty sure those aren’t their real names).

You can check out what I came up with on the right. I’ll spare you the song and dance discourse about what I think I would have done differently had I given it another try.

I interrupt this post to share a photo from the island paradise of Maui. Like anywhere in the United States, Hawaii has its problems, but it is also a truly vibrant, multi-cultural, beautiful place.

Kaanapala Beach, Maui, Hawaii and Lanai

The view from our hotel on Kaanapali Beach looking across to the island of Lanai.

This is the decorative inspiration I photographed in Honolulu that I tried to channel in my challenge tile.

This is the decorative inspiration I photographed in Honolulu that I tried to channel in my challenge tile.

This week’s Zentangle Diva challenge was by guest Diva, Amy Broady. She challenged us to use a metallic feature in our tile. I used a metallic silver Sharpie and a metallic bronze color gel pen. The colors didn’t come out quite as shiny as I hoped, but in real life, you can definitely see the shine. The two side areas of the triptych are silver; however, they photographed looking somewhat different.

The tangle (I’ll call it a pattern since I don’t think it has been “published” yet) is based on a decorative feature I photographed somewhere in Honolulu. (This is why people my age should write down things immediately). It was a back lit panel.

Here’s what I came up with for the challenge. Initially, I tried some shading, but it just made it look “dirty” rather than more interesting, so I erased it. (I can hear your collective gasp that there is an eraser any where near my Zentangle workspace.) 😉

20160229_080902-1-1Speaking of shiny things, before I even saw today’s Zentangle Diva’s challenge, I posted this photo on Instagram and Facebook of an interesting building under construction that I can see from our apartment’s kitchen window. The exterior is all glass and this morning’s sun lit up the facets despite the cloudy day.

Enough rambling for one blog post, I’ll end here by saying Aloha from Philadelphia.

P.S.: If anybody finds a lavender case full of pens, tortillions and blending pencils on their next American Airlines flight, it’s mine. Ditto if you find my favorite black travel sweater also donated to the American Airlines lost and found—somewhere. 🙁

Just for fun (and because misery loves company), what’s the thing you’ve lost while traveling that most pains you?

I love your shiny tangle pattern, it is very effective especially as you have drawn it in panels. What a wonderful shiny reflection on the new building, it is going to be wonderful to see at sunrise.

Sorry about your lost tangling equipment. I don’t think I have lost anything that I didn’t eventually find, I mean big things. I have lost plenty of socks and handkies, but they were hardly a loss that bothered me.

Very pretty tile. I can see that shimmer and shine. Nice pattern too. I don’t travel much so I don’t have the chance to lose things either. I do lose things in my house all the time though. The worst is trying to find something in my craft room. Drives me crazy 🙂

I guess it’s even worse when you lose something at home. I’ve done that myself only to find it several years later where I put it so I wouldn’t lose it—-after I’ve purchased a replacement for whatever it was.

Both beautiful tiles, you did a good job to glim with the metallic colors. Great story about your vacation in Hawaï . I dream about it. I hope you find your precies and sweather back.

Simple, yet beautiful tile. I do believe you should “de-construct” that back lit panel, and declare it a “Tangle pattern!” You could name it, “Aloha”, “Hawaii”, or “Vacation”. I think you get the idea. ( I have the uncanny knack of seeing designs in EVERYTHING”, so I have already broken this down, but it is your little “treasure”, from the island, so it is yours!)
It is dangerous when I drive and I see “shapes and images” in clouds! Have a great day!

I am working on step outs for that pattern and I like your suggestion for a Hawaiian themed name. I make my husband a little crazy, stopping to take photos of patterns on and in buildings and in nature.

Your whole blog post was great! Lots of fun stuff to read. Love the tiles for both weeks. And that building is something else – metallic in its own way.

Pretty tile. I’ll keep my eyes open for the new tangle 🙂

We loved Maui when we went many years ago now. We all kayaked down the west side of the island and had a great time hopping off and looking at the wildlife all around us!

Your tile is excellent and I can’t wait to see the step-out!

I love that new pattern!!!! Like Jean, I loose things in the house and some time ago I ‘lost’ a brooche that belonged to my mother (she died almost 45 years ago). This brooche was in my jewelry box for all those years and just last year I took it out and wanted to let the jeweler change it so I can wear it as a necklace. Then it disappeared…..until a few weeks ago when my help found it in a little corner. I’m sooo pleased; it has been changed now and I wear it all the time. Hm, got lost in my story, far away from the challenge. Memories…

I hope you having a great time on those wonderful islands and you can enjoy every moment. I see you still have time to draw. Challenge 256 is nice and for 257 that is supercool: seeing something in your neigbourhood and then making a real Zentangle tile. I cannot do that but you did it very well, congratulations!

Lovely shiny tile!
When I was a teen, I once lost my diary while travelling… Ouch! 😉

Gorgeous work Suzanne! I love your elegant Boo*Kee/Artoo piece and the shiny piece is beautifully composed. Your interpretation of the panel art is lovely. I see a new tangle in your/our future;-)

Your shiny Diva tile is beautiful. I think we all get carried away with using shading to add dimension. You’ve shown that 2D can be just as effective.

At Maggibee Manor we don’t talk about losing things when travelling, not since I left my engagement ring, my mother’s dress ring and an anniversary present ring in France some years ago. I also don’t buy – or get bought – good jewellery any more, what would be the point?

I love both pieces of work here, especially the one based on the panel. Can’t wait to see the step outs. come on girl, get on with it!

OOH, SHINY!
Love your travel stories, not been to Hawai’i, yet. As for “lost:”
I lost a blending stump on a Southwest flight from Baltimore to Hartford in November–it popped out of my hand and went! I forgot to pop a CD–the London Philharmonic plays Led Zeppelin–and a deck of Grand Canyon cards out of a rental car in Providence. TSA smashed a laptop on a metal counter in Manchester last year; I would consider that lost because the trauma rendered it useless. And I’m not sure what might have gone missing from them rifling through my checked baggage on any of those flights, hard to tell, they left, ahem, a mess.
Love your work and your tales. Congrats on the TripAdvisor listing! Cheryl

Oh Suzanne, I love to armchair travel with you! I would love to go to Hawaii someday. At one time there was a possible business trip in the works, but before that became an actuality, I just up and retired from the place. Hope someone had fun in my stead… Anyway, I love your metallic triptych, and by Jove, I am betting you do have a new tangle. Be sure to give it a suitably Hawaiian name! Your duotangle response is lovely too. It also reflects the Hawaiian theme beautifully. See how we become inspired? Your parting note about the lost and found no doubt touched a nerve with many readers. I still grieve over that beautiful white cotton batiste nightgown with the red embroidered flowers that was left hanging on the back of a hotel bathroom door some 25 years ago. You just can’t find something like that any more!

What fun travel adventures you have! Loved seeing all the lush colors as it is snowing out my window. 🙁 Beautiful tile and I will eagerly await the step outs!

Loved following your trip around Hawaii in pictures. Flyboy loves staying at the hotel with the Penguins when he is on a layover there. Sorry about the loss of your pens…and sweater. Oh, and nice shiny tile!

Always enjoy your posts! Your shiny Diva tile is stunning, and I will keep my eyes out for the step-out! And the view from your apartment! I lost my prescription “movie star” sunglasses while visiting friends in France. We searched everywhere to no avail. Then, 5 years later, they were returned via post. One of my friends’ little girls found them stashed away in a corner 🙂
