Zentangle Diva Challenge #258 – Travel Fatigue Edition

by Suzanne Fluhr on March 8, 2016 · 19 comments

The Zentangle Diva, Laura Harms, posted a brief note Monday morning, explaining that the Monday challenge would be delayed until Tuesday as she was exhausted from her trip returning to Saskatoon from Ottawa. Like the United States, Canada is a big country, stretching “from sea to shining sea” and Saskatoon is 2367 kilometers (1471 miles) northwest of Ottawa. Having recently flown 5,087 miles from Honolulu, Hawaii to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania via Dallas, Texas, I understand her travel fatigue.

I foolishly took a look at the Diva’s website when I should have been on my way to bed and there it was, this week’s challenge. One thing led to another and here it is 2:44 a.m. and I have just finished my challenge tile and I’m posting it. (Maybe I’m subconsciously challenging a very long night I had on this very day 32 years ago when our older son was born during a snowstorm.)

So, let me make this uncharacteristically brief. Yesterday being the first Monday of the month, it was “Use My Tangle” day when Laura shares a new tangle by another CZT for us to try. This week, the tangle is  Rautyflex by a German CZT, Katherin Bender. Laura mentioned that this is a tangle requiring a good deal of focus—yet another reason not to be trying it for the first time after 2:00 a.m., but here’s what I came up with:

I like this tangle and it has the potential for many tangleations, but since I’m tired, I played it straight. I still had some problems getting lost around the edges. I decided to use a Z shaped string like the ones I use in introductory Zentangle classes. On one side of Rautyflex, I used the tangle Arukas and on the other, I indulged myself by using a new tangle I deconstructed this morning, Aloha.

Bedtime. Actually, beyond bedtime and beyond tired. If you have time, please check out the step outs for Aloha, here. As always, comments are welcome.

Wow! I’m really impressed you ‘got’ this tangle in the early hours of the morning. I spent the evening trying to get something that looked passable but in the end, didn’t manage to work it into a tile. I’ll keep trying though.
Looks lovely with your new tangle! Happy Birthday to your son. The memories never really fade, do they?

Very good job with this. You got the kind of 3-d pop I was hoping to get with mine … that I don’t think I really achieved. I’ll be posting mine later today; we’ll see how it goes.

I have got to try Aloha soon!!!
You did a way better job than I did at Rautyflex. Yes I do like the tangle, but I can’t get the steps to stick in my head 😛

Thank you, Katherin. You’re the one person I believe if you think I got Rautyflex right. 🙂 I need to practice it some more, but I like it a lot and want to have it in my tangle repertoire.

Looks like an Arukas sun is shining down on a beautiful road. Great tile!

Amazing piece that you completed even being sleep deprived. You certainly nailed Rautyflex and selected perfect complimentary tangles to go with it. Happy birthday to your son 🙂

I like your tile but I find Rautyflex difficult and I think I ‘m gonna prefer Aloha.
Congratulations that you still can find such a nice new tangle. It will always be a memory of your vacationtime in Hawai!!!

I haven’t tried Aloha yet but it’s on my list. As for Rautyflex, it’s never going to be my favourite but that’s me, not the pattern. Your version is amazingly neat and organised but it’s time to get some sleep. Go on, bed time.

oh my, look at that luscious Aloha! ha! although the whole tile is terrific, especially for a wee hours piece, I just love the Aloha. Going to play with it for sure.

I really enjoy the contrast of the structured Rautyflex with Aloha. Can hardly wait to try your new tangle deconstruction!

You’ve added a new word to my vocabulary: tangleations.
