Zentangle Diva Challenge #251 – Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day Edition

Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day logo

[What in heaven’s name is Zentangle?]

This week, the Zentangle Diva, Laura Harms, asked us to produce a composition using the Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day logo. The Harms’s younger son was born with this very rare congenital neurological disorder adversely affecting cranial nerves VI and VII which control lateral movement of the face. As with many other syndromes, there are accompanying problems, the scariest being that this kindergartner is very susceptible to viruses and infections which have required many hospitalizations. (You can read more about this week’s challenge, here.)

The other thing to know about the Harms family is that they appear to be awesome people even though they live in Saskatoon, Canada where real air temperatures (not wind chill) have dipped to -40 centigrade this week. (At minus 40, the centigrade and Fahrenheit temperature scales actually converge, so my fellow Americans should be able to imagine what that feels like. On second thought, no, I cannot get my head around what minus 40 must feel like.) I love Canada. Some of my best friends are Canadian (including one adorable 3.5 pound travel blogging long-haired chihuahua named Montecristo}, but damn it gets cold up there. It’s now 17 degrees Fahrenheit here in Philadelphia, with a wind chill of 2 degrees F. and I’m whining like a total weather weenie I’m wondering if they have diapers for dogs.

I did something very dangerous this week. I and my credit card went here:

Blicks

Notice the fine print under the sign.

Where I saw this even though I was only looking for ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) paper:

pens

Nuff said. 😉

Here’s what I came up with in response to the Diva’s Moebius Syndrome challenge:

Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day logo

My tangled version of the Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day logo using the tangles N’Zeppel, a version of Printemps and for the border, my first published tangle, the imaginatively (NOT!) named “Phirst”. The interior stylized sun represents shining a light on Moebius Syndrome and also the glow of hope.

To all my friends around the world living above about 38 degrees north latitude, stay warm and stay safe!

How’s the weather where you’re reading this?

What a lovely sunny logo, and the detail in the strip is amazing. It must have taken you ages.

Now you should never ask a Yorkshire person about the weather, even if she does currently live in Ireland, you will be here for hours! We have had the most peculiar weather, all December was very mild when it should have been cold and even snowy. The temp did drop for a few days at the beginning of Jan but now we are back to mild and wet. It is so grey, and that is depressing, when it is very cold it is usually sunny with it which makes you feel so much better.

Wow, all those Micron pens, I didn’t know they made so many, in so many different colours! What luck to find them, did you spend a fortune on them?

Define “fortune”. 😉

Oh dearie me, a tangler in a pen shop. Well, their profits will be up by a significant amount. My son is getting married this year and has asked me to design and make the invitations. As if I needed an excuse to go to a craft shop.

I really, I mean REALLY love your Challenge tile, it is gorgeous. Just perrrrfect.

Hubby bought me a set of the Copic multiliners (same thing as the Microns) for Christmas. That’s what I used to do my mobius as well. I do think you did an extremely detailed piece, and it’s beautiful. Ha! I live in sunny AZ and I whine when it falls below 70 degrees. It’s all what you’re used to I suppose. I prefer the 100+ temps myself.

Your challenge tile is spectacular! And Bravo to you for experimenting with email couponing. I’m still working on it:) As to the weather…in the 20’s here in Charleston! But that’s nothing compared to some years that I lived in Minneapolis and then the 18 years I lived in Milwaukee. Once, in Milwaukee, I had to blink a dozen times while staring at the TV weather…the real air temp was minus 40. Yep…I had to get my behind to work, too:)

Now they are predicting a snow event/nor’easter for this weekend. I can’t believe they make people go to work when the air temp is minus 40.

A dangerous foray, indeed! I won’t even allow myself to see what happens in a Jerry’s Art-o-rama. (My son-in-law recently offered to take me to lunch and Jerry’s. Am I the luckiest mother-in-law ever or what?) I love your sunny Moebius strip. Warms my heart.

Wonderful tile with the Möbius logo! Your tangles are so finely and detailed! Beautifully drawn. I like your frame with Phirst as well!

Bright and beautiful – a perfect logo representation. I love that brightness.

I’m a bit jealous: you have made such brightful colours in your tile.
Tomorrow I’m gonna buy also coloured micropens and try to use them, your result is beautiful.
(like your dogs)

Hi Ria- I wanted to leave a comment on your blog about your lovely work and your dog snow story (they’re adorable), but as you know, you have comments turned off and I can’t use your contact function because I don’t use “Outlook” for email. Tangle on!

Your Moebius sign is beautiful! The compliment yellow has a great effect and the tangles are delicate.

Ahh….Blick. They have so many lovely things. And are willing to ship them to my doorstep (unless I happen to be in Berkeley where they have not one but two stores!) Your tile is lovely and sunny on a gray and rainy day.

Your tile is beautiful, Suzanne! We both used yellow, as they say ‘great minds …..’
Here in The Netherlands we had a very (too) mild november and december and just the last week brought us some snow and temperatures below 0 C. The lowest was – 8 C in the night. This morning is above 0 again. Good for me, I can ride my bicycle again 🙂
What a great feeling, coming home with all those pens isn’t it?

Love your purpleness for Moebius awareness. The sunny center reminds me of the sun sign of the Zia people (Really! Coincidence? I think not!) on every New Mexico license plate.
To answer your question: December 2014 I was in Maine when it dropped to -26F, which can’t be much different from -40. I wanted to go to the beach as it was so cold the salt water was freezing. That would have been something to see. But it was so cold I didn’t leave the house for three days.
Currently it’s a sunny 57 in Black Canyon City, Arizona. Since I’ve acclimated to the heat of the desert, at this temperature I still need a hat and mittens. I’m wearing thermal underwear, secretly wishing for 100, which isn’t all that different from 115.
And for a trip to Blick. OMG. Never been to one of their stores and I probably just shouldn’t! I could already start a small outpost right in my house.
All the best, Suzanne! Cheryl

You’re absolutely right about the sun looking like the sun on the New Mexico license plates, but I swear I didn’t know that was a sign of the “Zia” people. I think I probably prefer cold to excessive heat since you can always put on more layers, but a nMediterranean climate would be nice.

Very lovely tile! I love the patterns that you used. The yellow really sets off everything. As to the foray out with the credit card, I hope you didn’t do to much damage! I have to limit myself, when I get the chance to stop by Blick, otherwise I get myself in trouble!

WOW. This is great. It took certainly a long time to fill the logo with these small patterns. And the sunny background makes your tile even more friendly and beautyful.

Rigth now is 79°F, and partially sunny in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
This logo is wonderful! I think we can impress T-shirts with it.
My six years old girl was born with the syndrome. Here is very very rare. But she has a normal life.
This year we want to go to Toronto, Canada.
We want to see Dr. Ronald Zucker, the surgeon who is “drawing” smiles.
God permits this visit happens!

Thank you, Crisanta. I am sending positive thoughts that you make it to Toronto with your daughter. Buena suerte con todo.

I’m reading this in our hotel room in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where it was 51 degrees when we arrived and boy did those 51 degrees feel good. We left home – northern Maryland – on Tuesday morning, the temperature was 18 degrees. The night before we left the overnight temp hit 12 degrees. I, like you, cannot fathom the idea of living anywhere the temps dip below 0 on a regular basis. Fortunately, since we are retired we do not “have” to go out when the temps are ridiculously cold, and that’s how we survive it! But below 0, no way, no how on a daily living basis. Bah!

I hope you have a snow shovel. 🙂 When we moved into a Center City Philly high rise apartment building, we donated our snow blower to our old block. I think it’s known as the Fluhr-Albelda Memorial Snow Blower.

I absolutely love this! The yellow is perfect with all the purple. Your Phirst border is so delicate and lovely! Everything here is so intricate, and then you have that Southwestern inspired sun in the center. Gorgeous! Anyway, hang on to your hats, all you Easterners. I hope you don’t get too much of what they are predicting. (I won’t say that four letter word that starts with S. I also won’t tell you that where I am the predicted high today is 71 – oops, I let that slip out, didn’t I?) Stay safe and warm and do beautiful Zentangle work!

What an absolutely stunning tile, Suzanne. It’s bold and delicate at the same time. Very nicely done. I know what you mean about the weather. I’m in Utah and when it hit -2F, I was shivering nicely, but I can’t even imagine what -40F would feel like! My dad tells me stories of when he was growing up in North Dakota and they would get deep freezes like that and he said that there were many cats with their ear tips frozen off. So I definitely don’t want to go where it’s that cold!

But back to your tile…I LOVE the yellow sun in the center…it just makes the whole piece light up. And using your tangle for the strips down the side add so much to the design.

I want to be able to go to your Blick store…ours is very small, or maybe it just feels that way because there is so much stuff in there. I find I have to limit myself to going there only about once a month. Either that or I need to come out of retirement and find a job to support my habit…lol. Stay warm and have a zen-ful day!

These designs all remind me of the Spirograph game I always wanted but never had as a kid. As a matter of fact I might go looking for one on ebay right now.
