Passports with Purpose 2013 – Donate to Help Build Schools in Mali (And You Might Win Cool Prizes Too!)

by Suzanne Fluhr on December 3, 2013 · 6 comments

As Boomeresque readers have probably divined by now, like most travel bloggers, I have a fairly serious case of wanderlust that has taken me to many parts of the world. Through my travels, I have seen the magnificence of which human beings are capable, but also those who are struggling just to subsist.

In 2008, Passports with Purpose was created as an annual travel bloggers’ fundraiser. Each year, the program chooses a non-profit organization to support in its effort to improve the lives of those less fortunate who share our planet. Passports with Purpose carefully vets the programs chosen for support.

My experience has convinced me of the importance of education in improving the life prospects for those struggling in poverty and oppression. I am deeply moved by the story and work of Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani girl speaking out in support of education for girls and women. Her advocacy made her a target of the Taliban who oppose the education of girls and attempted to murder her on her school bus.

This year, Passports with Purpose has chosen buildOn to be the recipient of the funds raised. The goal is to raise $115,000 to build three primary schools and fund three Adult Literacy Programs in the Sikasso Region of Mali, Africa.

Okay. So, here’s the FUN PART of this very serious effort. Working with partners in all aspects of the travel industry, bloggers have secured prize contributions. For every $10 you donate, you are registered for a chance to win a prize you designate. If you are planning to donate $50 and there is only one prize that catches your eye, you can be entered to win that prize five times. If you want to spread your luck around, you can choose a different prize for each $10 donation. Click here for a link to the prize catalog and to donate.

If you’re a lawyer like I am and you need want to see the rules or even if you’re just a normal regular person and want to see the rules, you can do so here.

You have until December 9, 2013 at 11:59 EST to donate and choose prizes for which you would like to be entered. Winners for each prize will be notified by December 16, 2013 and will have 3 business days to reply or another prize winner will be drawn for that prize. You are welcome to continue to donate even after the raffle portion of the fundraising campaign is completed.

Have you contributed? If so, do you want to share which prize(s) you would like to win?

I’ve read and seen alot of Malala on the net ironically through several of my blogger friends. What an riveting, powerful story she has, Suzanne. This a wonderful cause to support through Passports with a Purpose and buildOn! I donate continually throughout the year to various groups and I will definitely be popping over and taking a look. Great timing on this post as this is the giving time of year 🙂

Thanks, Mike. I tried to time my blog post for cyber Tuesday. I think I made it “technically”, but it didn’t hit subscribers’ emails until this morning. Oh well. Last year, they raised over $100,000 to drill wells in Haiti for clean water. I feel very strongly that education is the answer for so many of the worlds’ and even our country’s ills.
