Capture the Colour 2013 (A Photo Essay)

by Suzanne Fluhr on September 6, 2013 · 36 comments

Yes, yes, my fellow Americans (United Statesers), I know you think I spelled “colour” incorrectly; but, “colour” is the correct spelling if you are from the United Kingdom, a British Commonwealth nation or somewhere the British bequeathed their spelling.  The British even left behind their spelling in places where they didn’t leave behind a host of good feelings (I’m looking at you Republic of Ireland). However, this post is actually my entry in the “Capture the Colour” photo contest sponsored by Travel Supermarket, a British travel company — so I figure they get to pick whatever spelling they want.

The premise is that entrants submit photos representing each of the primary colours (red, blue and yellow) — along with green and white. Don’t feel badly. I didn’t know which were the primary colors (um, colours) either. So, without further spelling angst, here are Boomeresque’s photo submissons:

RED

Indonesian Wax Ginger - Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, outside Hilo, The Big Island

BLUE

Blue Water Off the Coast of Bonaire, a Dutch Special Municipality in the Carribean

YELLOW

GREEN

WHITE*

Garganta del Diablo (The Devil's Throat), Iguazu Falls, Argentina

* “White” is black — for obvious reasons.

I didn’t know about this contest until I was nominated by my favorite long-haired chihuahua travel blogger, Montecristo. I also get to nominate five other blogs (and their bloggers, of course) to submit their five color/colour photos. Don’t worry, if you are nominated, you may decline to serve. However, these bloggers have proven to be masterful photographers in the past, so we hope they’ll join in. Even if one does not have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning this contest (i.e. moi), it is a fun excuse to waste spend some time looking through one’s photos from a colorful/colourful perspective.  (P.S.: You don’t have to be nominated to participate in this contest. If you have a blog and colorful photos, go for it.)

My nominees:

Linda Fairbairn of Journey Jottings                Veronica and David James of The Gypsy Nesters

Tom Bartel of Travel Past 50                                Dale and Franca of Anglo-Italian Follow Us

                                                Jaime of Breakaway Backpacker

Thanks, Patti. If anyone is in the mood for more flower pics, the Indonesian Wax Ginger is from the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and here is a link to another blog post I did about that garden:

Nice shots and thank you so much for nominating us. Best of luck for the competition 😉

Thanks, Franca. I think you have until October 6th to post your photos for the contest. Let me know if you do a blog post, so I can check out the competition 😉 and probably become depressed.

Thanks for the nomination –
I’ve just come back from a trip to the Northern Territory in Australia so this is a perfect excuse to go on a photo journey to capture the colour of the Top End and the Red Centre 🙂

Linda, please make sure to let me know when you have posted your photos on your blog. I think you have until October 6th.

Hi Suzanne: Sorry re your tooth. The colors are lovely. I see you don’t think you
need all the colors in one picture. Very handsome. All my love, Renee

Suzanne Fluhr (Boomeresque) September 7, 2013 at 8:23 pm

Thanks, Renee. The rules are that there is supposed to be a photo representing each of the colors—rather than one representing all of them. As for the tooth (and now it’s more like a “teeth” thing), I’m getting by with a mixture of ibuprofen and acetominaphen which the dentist insists is better than narcotics for dental pain. I think he may be right.

Beautiful photographs. Thanks so much for sharing them. I particularly love the red…but then I am partial to red 🙂

Thanks, Jacquie, but you might be in rare company. It seems as though folks are partial to the green photo with the marsh grass and the snowy egret.

Hi Suzanne,
My favorite has to be the egret in the grass. Love how the grasses have no up-down-left-right orientation and just seem abstract. And then there’s the seeds hanging in long rows from grass blades like a million flagstaffs in a parade. Brava!

I had fun entering this contest last year. Here’s a link to mine:

Hope your Autumn is going well!

Those were great photos you submitted last year, Josie, –even (especially) the “accident”.

Beautiful pictures and I hope you win. If I have to pick a favorite, is the Egret. The bird and the tall grasses seem to flow beautifully.

Thanks, Neva. I don’t usually even think of “win” and my name in the same sentence. Although I did win a travel photo roulette contest once. The theme was “Cheesy Tourist Attractions” — and I was part of the attraction! http://www.boomeresque.com/59-travel-photo-roulette-revolution/

So much for inspiring nature photos or artful photos of architecture. Oh well. One can always aspire.

Yeah, that egret shot is an award winner, in my book. They’re all really nice and that egret one spills over into Art. Which brings us to that timeless question, “What is Art?” The egret picture – that’s what! You and Steve ever think of putting together a yearly calendar of pics for family and friends??? Just sayin’, hint, hint…..holidays are a comin’…

Suzanne Fluhr September 8, 2013 at 8:57 pm

You want a calendar for a present? Aren’t calendars sooo yesterday. 😉

I love your photos Suzanne, and although I have a huge spft spot for sunflowers, your Green photo is the one that stands out for me. The stark contrast and composition are superb:)

Suzanne Fluhr September 8, 2013 at 8:58 pm

Thanks, Johanna—The green one is clearly winning my own little personal contest.

Mike, I’m blushing. With the new equipment, even my Android phone camera takes better than decent photos (IMHO, anyway 😉 You’re the first one to pick the Caribbean and Iguazu Falls photos as the best.

I agree with the others … my favorite is the egret. Where did you take that one?

Reply

Suzanne Fluhr September 11, 2013 at 12:39 am

I believe that somewhere in your bio, it says you spent part of your childhood in New Jersey. That’s a New Jersey, egret. We own a “beach” house in Brigantine, New Jersey. It’s actually a half mile hike to the beach, but it backs up onto a small (very small) bay. That photo was taken from our back deck which has bay views. Sea birds often congregate in the salt water marsh grass around the bay. The grass floods at high tide.

Suzanne- You are a great photographer. I love the daisy image. I feel like I could pick them and put them in a vase. I also liked the egret as it shows there are many area of New Jersey that are beautiful.

Suzanne Fluhr September 13, 2013 at 12:40 pm

Thanks. I must say that digital photography helps since you can take as many photos as you want to try to get a decent shot. I’m old enough to remember when we had to just click and hope it came out ok and not find out until weeks later when the film was developed that your finger was over the lens.

It’s always fun going through old photos. Great excuse/reason to reminisce. You’ve got some great colour photos – yes, that’s how we spell it in Jamaica too.
That ginger wax is beautiful red. Glad you included the name — I’m so bad with the names of plants. Also love the Bonaire blue and the yellow and the white and the green. Love them all!

Suzanne Fluhr September 14, 2013 at 2:43 am

Thanks, Marcia. When I included that wax ginger in a blog post about the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, first I misidentified it. Fortunately, there were some experts to set me straight.

Thanks for stopping by. I also stopped by your blog to see your submission for Capture the Colour 2013. Seeing every body else’s photos is inspiring me to up my photographic game. I was interested to see that you have a south Florida based blog. Our son is a University of Miami grad and never wanted to come home to the frozen northland. He is also a travel blogger and lives in South Beach. He was also taken by the murals and graffiti in Wynwood and did a blog post about them. http://www.theworldorbust.com/wynwood-art-walk/

I came to your blog to look at a different post, but could resist the allure of this one. I always enjoy your photo challenges and this one did not disappoint. I was debating which I liked more, the red or the blue, then saw the green one, beautiful.

Suzanne Fluhr October 23, 2013 at 11:30 pm

Thanks, Debra. The green one seems to be the favorite, but some of the submissions by other entrants are truly awesome (and I don’t like to overuse that word).
