Zentangle Diva’s Weekly Challenge #187 – Blind String

Zentangle Diva's challenge #187. Blind string.

Today didn’t start well. Our rental apartment had no running water. Fortunately, this turned out to be a First World problem because it’s already fixed. I used the lack of running water as an excuse to check out the newly remodeled cafe across the street. I was looking forward to having a new venue, free of distractions such as laundry to be done, the disaster that masquerades as my desk, a cute dog to play with, ad nauseum). I was disappointed to find that as far as I and my curmudgeonly self are concerned, the cafe renovation is a classic case of “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”. The acoustics are worse than ever and the new seating configuration is just weird. They had music blaring and people were not using their “inside” voices; in their defense, possibly so they could converse over the music.

However, I was determined to get into a zone and devote myself to the Diva’s weekly challenge (#187)  to tangle a tile using a string drawn with one’s eyes closed. I bought myself a mug of coffee, took out my protein bar (while silently congratulating myself for foregoing an almond croissant), admired the table (since I see tangles everywhere), got out my supplies and, *#$&^@*&#$, realized I had brought the wrong sketchbook—one that was all used up. I rummaged around in my back pack to see if I could salvage the situation and decided I could make do with a piece of copy paper on which I had printed out a new tangle, but still had enough white space for me to try to draw a square. It wasn’t the best quality paper, but I worked with it and am satisfied with the result even though the atmosphere wasn’t very Zen.

Zendala

Getting ready. Zendala table top to help set the mood.

And for no reason other than it was beautiful……

Brigantine, New Jersey sunset.

Brigantine, New Jersey sunset last night. I was able to appreciate the beauty even though the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the San Francisco Forty-Niners. Oh well, there’s always next week.

And now, there’s a load of laundry with my name on it………

So, how’s your day going?

I really like your tile, especially the tangles you have chosen and how you have placed them. Sounds like you had quite a day – what a lovely table you tangles at and what a glorious sunset.

Thank you, Kia. That table is one of several at the cafe I don’t like — except for the coffee and the tables. 🙂

I love your tile. the way you made those lines from little circles made me think of crochet work. very open worked crochetwork connecting odd pieces of fabric with pretty prints.
the table is very nice. very inspiring indeed.

Thank you, Cobi. I just visited your blog and see that you work on crazy quilts. I don’t know where they started, but crazy quilts were quite popular in the young United States when they had to use every scrap of fabric for something useful. I can see why my tile reminded you of one.

I think your tile is nice plus the sunset pic is simply beautiful!

Thanks, Jacque. I feel as though I need to add something pretty to my challenge posts to compensate for my lack of skill tangling. However, I enjoy it, so you can expect to see me back for the Diva’s Weekly Challenge as often as i can be.

Great Tile, Suzanne. Terrific patterns, and I love your use of the perfs, and their shading lift them right off the tile. Wonderful work.

David, thank you for stopping by to check out my Diva’s weekly challenge tile. I’m not exactly sure what a “perf” is, but I’m glad you like mine.

What gorgeous photos and tile! I loved the table.. too pretty! And is it just me or does the teacup match as well?

P.S. I sometimes feel very un-zen too, as I flap around trying to get as much as I can done, with the threat of housework looming on the horizon xD

The coffee cup and saucet do have the same look as the table top, but don’t match exactly which actually makes the set up even more quaint—-if only they would turn down the music. That settles it. I have become my mother.

Your tile is beautiful and well done. Poor you only having a corner of a A4 of not so good paper. Thanks for your story, hope your laundry is done by now 🙂

Great contrast. I like the frame that doesn’t go all the way around.

And a great tile you managed to create despite the difficulties. I like how intricate it is and the movement inside. Well done!

What a lovely tile did you make! Your string is really flow-y, I like it! And that table top is beautiful too!

How lucky to have a coffee shop nearby to run away to. I love the picture of Brigantine as I grew up in New Jersey and miss the shore sooooo much. Rick and Maria always point out that you don’t need fancy anything to tangle. You can tangle with a stick in the sand, so good improvisation. (Rick and Maria often do wonderful work on tablecloths and napkins!)

Thanks, Jean. I actually have 3 coffee shops within one block or our apartment—and they all seem to be doing a brisk business. That’s a lot of caffeine. I hope you can get back to the New Jersey shore sometime. The water’s a lot cleaner than it used to be back when I was a child—admittedly, quite a few years ago now.

I think I would like your mother too. Even your short posts are entertaining. As for the tile, so much going on and lots of clever bits too. I assume you have discovered by now that perfs are the little filler or edging circles. Very handy little embellishments. Good tile, like it lots.

I think I might be addicted to perfs. 🙂
