Zentangle Diva’s Challenge #228 – Inspired by Nature Edition

by Suzanne Fluhr on July 27, 2015 · 23 comments

One wonderful aspect of CZT training was meeting tanglers from all over. That's Cari to the right on the front row, siitting next Alicia Gutierrez Rey from Spain. Behind her is Michelle Silverman from Minnesota, behind Cari is Debbie Lim from Singapore and next to her is moi from Philly.

This week’s guest Zentangle Diva is Cari Sultanik, a classmate from the Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) training #18. That experience was enhanced by meeting Cari and other interesting people from around the world.

Inspired by the summer (at least in the northern hemisphere), Cari’s challenge was for us to go organic. Cari is from the Philadelphia suburbs, so maybe it’s a Philly thing, but even before today’s challenge, I’ve been finding myself tangling flowers and curvy, swirly things all summer.

For example, this amazing hibiscus inspired this:

And last night, this appeared:20150727_091605-1

And a few days ago, this came along:

I’m hanging out at the beach in Brigantine, New Jersey as much as possible this summer. During one beach stroll, I got an eye roll from my husband, Mr. Excitement, when I pointed out that the surf foam reminded me of Tipple. But, I’m sure my tangling friends would agree. Right?

Some of you might have noticed the wine glasses in front of the CZT trainees. We have no idea to whom they belonged. (That’s our story and we’re sticking to it.) However, coincidentally, my most recent blog post on Boomeresque is about wine. Pure coincidence. 😉

Has nature ever inspired your Zentangle art and have you ever enjoyed some wine while tangling?

That hibiscus photo is amazing, such colours. Your take on it is full of life and movement. I like the pastel colours in the third of your pieces, they are summery without being loud. Looking at this, I see what I keep getting wrong when I use Sandswirl. (Well, not WRONG, obviously but…) I keep putting the shadow all round the shapes instead of emphasizing one side. Must try to remember that.

As for the wine glasses, all I can say is, I believe you, honest.

As for the wine glasses, did anyone ever tell you you are too trusting. 😉

Your entries never disappoint! Beautiful work. I love the softness on the edges you used on some tangles and how you had them work together on a tile. Nice! Sarah.

Wow! These are stunning…I especially love the middle one though, with the line width variation on Flux (must try that now!) and minimalist composition…beautiful. I’m afraid that I’ll never be able to post my response to this challenge, since I already have at least 5 things I want to do jumping around in my head, and I’m sure more will come ^_^ Thanks for the inspiration!

These are ALL fantastic, Suzanne. I especially love the one with the color, but that hibiscus is gorgeous. I’d love to see a splash of fuchsia on just that part of the tile. But it’s also just perfect in black and white! Glad you like the nature-inspired tangles too! And thank you for the multitude of shares 🙂

Such lovely flowers. Is that hibiscus from your own garden? Oh, and I do know the eye roll. Poor hubby. I see tangles everywhere.

The hibiscus wasn’t from my garden. I didn’t even think it was real at first. I’ve never seen one IRL, but Mr. Google confirms that it’s a thing. Apparently, it is a Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, also known as a Fiery Furnace Hibiscus.

What a lovely blog entry! I liked seeing the photo’s of your CZT classmates, and the beautiful Hibiscus! And a great variety of tiles, all beautiful and organic. I ‘specially love the one with colour. And yes, sometimes there is wine, like right now while I’m looking at this website, but honestly, I draw much better without it (though usually I don’t notice until the next day….)

I don’t know how I draw with a little alcohol on board, but I definitely become more fluent—-in Spanish. 😉

I love seeing how you interpreted the hibiscus into a tangle. So clever! And I so understand the eye-roll – I even see patterns in my dreams!

Oooh!! So nice to see you put up our picture!! I have been bringing our polaroids to class and I show them our lovely group at seminar, plus the guy who helped us take those photos 😛 Always scores me some giggles.. and brings me back to our time at R.I. in an instant 🙂

Thank you for tagging me on FB when your post went up. I have been having a couple of bad weeks in terms of pain. I did not check till today and whilst I’ve managed to do Cari’s challenge, I decided to skip last week’s altogether.

Your last piece is my favourite one 🙂 I think you have got this whole colour ‘thing’ hands down <3

Thank you, Debbie. I was a little afraid people might be angry at me for posting that group photo, but so far, no one has complained. I’m really sorry to learn that you haven’t been feeling well. I hope it resolves quickly.

You got to meet Cari! Luckeeee.

All three of your tiles are so cute. I smiled at the second one. Love that Opus looking thing ….or maybe that isn’t Opus…growing up from the corner. made me smile. But the use of color in the third tile is just stunning. Good work

Lovely stuff! There is a winery a couple of miles up hill from our home. Hubby and I go up often to enjoy the, err, view. Yes, that’s it, the view!

Nice work. Organic can be fun. Like how you combined organic with more structured tangles. And yes, the surf foam does look like Tipple. I just wonder sometimes what causes it.
