Zentangle Diva Challenges ## 248 &249 – Happy New Year Edition (and Catching Up)

by Suzanne Fluhr on January 5, 2016 · 14 comments

Right before Christmas, the Zentangle Diva challenged us to do a Zentangle inspired gift for someone. I dutifully began working on my project, but before I posted it, I managed an inelegant face plant while walking my husband to work. The poor guy was walking to work at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on a Sunday to take care of sick people and there was his wife copiously bleeding from her face. No one was around because most people were still sleeping, but I fortunately tripped in front of an apartment building with a manned front desk. The front desk guy allowed us to use their bathroom to get me cleaned up and to assess the damage. Mr. Dr. Excitement decided I didn’t need stitches and nothing seemed to be broken so he continued on and I walked home—-very carefully. I thought I was fine other than some unsightly wounds, but the next day I started feeling “off”. I diagnosed myself as having a mild concussion and my live in physician agreed. The treatment is nothing—literally, to do nothing as much as possible to rest one’s brain.

My project was a peace bird for my mother. I was channeling my father who was an art teacher. Every year, he did a silk screen for our family holiday card.  Usually, it was some type of bird of peace. My project doesn’t seem to have resulted in any world peace breaking out, but here it is:

So, moving right along, this week the Diva is celebrating 5 years of challenges. She asked us to do a “duotangle” tile using the tangles Diva Dance and Auraknot.  I used the tangleation Diva Dance Rock & Roll. My Auraknot technique definitely needs some work. Some of the ones I did remind me of deranged gyroscopes. Here it is:

20160105_154822-1I won’t blather on here to complain about the weather (1 degree Fahrenheit this morning when I walked our dog), especially with so many who participate in the Diva challenges living in Canada.  (Feel free not to export any more polar vortecies (or is it vortexes?). )

My other accomplishment today was to finish my year in review blog post. If you’re interested, you can find it here. It seems we were hither and yon quite a bit.

Happy New Year to all tanglers far and wide!

Hi Suzanne, I’m hoping your face/head is better now and that you were still well enough to enjoy the holiday season. As for weather- yours is cold, ours is unseasonably mild and monsoonly wet. We live half way up a hill so if the floods get as far as us I’ll be expecting Noah at about the same time. However, some areas a little to the north and west of us are having a shocking time.
I love your dove of peace, both in terms of design and colour, a very fitting and beautiful thing, as a piece of art and as a sentiment.
As for the Diva Challenge, and I won’t hear a word against gyroscopes, deranged or otherwise. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

What! No picture of the smooshed face? I’ll bet you were a sight. Your gyroscopes certainly are interesting LOL! Seriously though, please take it easy my friend. No more falling! And, I think your bird is just beautiful!

Yikes! Happy that you weren’t alone and hope that you have recovered… mild or not, concussions aren’t all that fun. Love your dove of peace…so pretty and actually very peaceful to observe! And I have always had a soft spot for deranged gyroscopes:)

Suzanne, I do hope you are recovering nicely from your walk in the park. Your dove is lovely, nicely colored and may I ask, what could possibly be wrong with deranged gyroscopes? All those teenie divas dancing around are just darling! Have a brilliant new year! Cheryl

I too had a concussion (pretty serious) this past summer in a tubing accident…and I still suffer the effects of it almost six months later 🙁 Please take the time you need, even if in your deduction was only minor. I’m so glad your mother got her completed peace bird before the fall…I found Zentangle® not so therapeutic in the healing process, unfortunately. Oh well…nice job on your Auraknot…it seems we have something in common…definitely not a love for Auraknot from this side of the keyboard either 😉 Take care of you.

I left a long comment the other evening…and it wouldn’t post. Blowed if I can remember all I said but it did include hoping that you’re feeling better now. And that I really do like your dove.
I also think it’s a really cool trick to turn Auraknots into gyroscopes. You should be feeling very proud of yourself!! Axxx
(Ah, and I think I mentioned that we had snow here! Just a little but enough to stop the Cabalgata from proceeding…)

I do hope you feel better now, Suzanne! For 2016 I wish you warmth, light, creativity and health (in fact all you need to live a pleasant life).
Your dove is beautiful and it’s message so needed in this world. The challenge tile is lovely too.
Take care!!!!

Oh dear that hurt! I know because my partner did the opposite thing and fell backwards gassing the back of the head. We spent all Christmas resting due to concussion and no drinking due to the thumping headache. I do hope your face has cleared up cleanly. I love your gyroscopes, I have been wondering what the shape reminds me of.

Ouch. I think a backward fall would be scarier, but probably prettier. I wasn’t trying to channel gyroscopes. It just happened and I may be one of the few people who think those Auraknot tangles look at all like gyroscopes.
