Zentangle Diva Challenge #357 – Longing for Real Spring

by Suzanne Fluhr on March 26, 2018 · 21 comments

Rittenhouse Square snow scene in Philadelphia march 2018

In her challenge this week, the Zentangle Diva, Laura Harms, lamented that notwithstanding the date on the calendar, spring didn’t seem close to springing in Saskatoon, Canada where she lives. I was uncharitably rolling my eyes and thinking, “Canada, Duh”, until I was shivering while walking the dog here in Philadelphia, a good number of degrees latitude south of Saskatoon.

Actually, I looked it up, Philly is only approximately 12 degrees latitude south of Saskatoon; and, on the official first day of spring last week, this happened in Philadelphia:

Rittenhouse Square snow scene in Philadelphia march 2018

I captured this beautiful night scene on Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia on the first day of spring, 2018. It was so beautiful, it almost made me not be bitter that the dog and I were wearing our winter coats and boots.

This week, Laura challenged us to use the tangle, Paradox , in a monotangle, that is, a tile using only one tangle. (Paradox is a tangle deconstructed by Rick Thomas of the Zentangle Mother Ship). I decided to do a monotangle within a monotangle—or Paradoxes within a Paradox—which is kind of what it feels like living in the United States these days.

This is the string I used:

the zentangle tangle Paradox as a string

And this is what it looked like when I was finished paradoxing the paradoxical:

Zentangle diva challenge 357

Some of my Zentangle Diva friends may have noticed my absence from the weekly challenge for more than several weeks. I’ve been doing them, but not getting around to posting.

This was my challenge tile from last week’s challenge when we were to use our name in a tile. In this composition, I wrote my name using a faux calligraphy I saw somewhere online, auraed that, and then used two new tangles I’ve published recently—like today: Springish and Spearator.

So, now I have to bundle up to take the dog outside for another walk. As much as I’m lamenting a spring that seems to be stuck somewhere, I did see this over the weekend:

Spring flowering tree on Delancey Place, Philadelphia

Even though I reserve my right to whine about the temperature outside today, this is also happening, so surely, real spring can’t be too far away. Right?

Is spring springing where you live yet (assuming you live in the northern hemisphere)?

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…. WAIT NO – it’s Spring!! I LOVE the snow people and your beautiful Square picture. I’m sorry you’re experiencing winter in spring BUT it sure is beautiful!!!

It was beautiful for about 24 hours. Then the snow melted and everything became muddy and I was really annoyed that it was cold enough today for me to wear my winter coat, scarf and gloves. I’m ready for real spring!

Yeah, I don’t like Mud Season either! Or Skunk Season. Or Hellicopter Leaves Season (ruins the pool). Or the recent Ladybug Season where they come in when you open the door and fly into your face, up your nose, in your hair, in that open mouth – food – UGH. I can’t wait until real Spring, too – we had 30 degrees last night – what??

Wow! Wonderful paradox tile!! The paradox in paradox is a really neat idea. It kind of has a rose like effect as it gets smaller and smaller in the middle. Beautiful snow picture, too! Hopefully spring weather will come soon for you!

Yes it seems to be unseasonably seasonal a lot at present. Snow in March and blizzards blizzing. However, it’s no good grumbling and then sending us photos that look enchanting – you can’t have it all ways, Suzanne. So have you done step outs for the new tangles then? Come on, chop chop!

Yes, I did the step outs for the new tangles. They are linked to in this post: Springish and Spearator.

Great tangling…it looks so complex!

I live in CT so I understand what you are experiencing….four snow storms in four weeks! I am choosing to look at it as – they are not blizzards, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, or hurricanes. I can deal with the snow. I live in New England and in the late 1980’s we had a snow storm in May! My 95 year old neighbor said that when she was 10 it snowed one day in early June! The thing about getting snow this time of the year is that it doesn’t stick around as long. :o) My daffodils are coming up and are my harbingers of warmer days to come!

As for the Us being a paradox within a paradox, you are so right. I don’t want this to get political so enough said on this topic. :o)

Enjoy spring when it gets here!
:o)

Hi Suzanne. Hello to fellow Boomer. I too helped in the over usage of the planet just by being born during 1946 (they shut down the war so I could be born). (hahahaJ). I like your tile this week, all those paradoxes within one another. I am just returning after a long absence and this is my first week back on the Diva Challenge. Good to see you again.

The image of Rittenhouse Square is so atmospheric and would be great for a Christmas card. Nevertheless, the flowering tree is more suitable for spring.
The paradox in paradox is very sophisticated and wonderfully drawn.

Well, if it weren’t spring, it would be a winter wonderland! How regal, elegant and sparkly! I have hit the garden this week, therefore it IS spring in Chapel Hill. Paradox in Paradox, life in the USA. The first is wonderful! Happy Easter!

Nice Paradox tangling. I love this tangle. I find it so relaxing. I could not get mine posted until late today. It is snowing here in Central Indiana right now. Is staying on the ground and trees but not the roads.
