Zentangle Diva’s Challenge #234 – The Unofficial End of Summer Edition

Zentangle Diva Challenge Can T

New to the concept of Zentangle? You can learn more about it here.

We celebrated Labor Day this week in the United States and Canada. In both countries, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. In Philadelphia, students started the school year yesterday. Apparently, summer didn’t get the memo about Labor Day because it was the 3rd day of a heat wave with a high temperature of a humid 93 degrees (34 degrees Celsius). Most of the schools are not air conditioned. It’s hard to imagine much learning went on. I can remember days like that when I was a Philadelphia public school student. It was pretty miserable.

Pope Francis arriving by airplane

Philadelphia public school students have another unusual three day holiday at the end of the month because Pope Francis is coming to spend the weekend and draconian (but probably necessary) security measures are closing down the central core of the city. I was moved to write a somewhat irreverent blog post about our papal preparations. I called it: Philadelphia Phreak Out – Popeapocalypse Now.

The Zentangle Diva’s two sons also recently started kindergarten and second grade respectively. She shared some cute photos of their first day of school and then this week’s challenge. It’s a UMT (Use My Tangle) challenge. The tangle is Can T by CZT (Certified Zentangle Teacher) Chris Titus. I really, really like this tangle. It reminds me of patchwork quilt patterns and I’m a quilter wannabe with a three quarters way finished quilt in my “I wish I still did these” hobbies armoire. (It lives there with my sewing machine, oboe and recorders).

Enough blather. Here is my Can T tile with a little bit of Cubine, Stipple, Stiritup and Hollibaugh for background.

Zentangle Diva Challenge Can T

As much as I’ve carried on here about it being too hot, rest assured I will soon be complaining that it’s too cold and why can’t Canada just keep its polar vortex to itself. I got a jump on that this week with a piece I had published in the Huffington Post Travel section. If your tangling hand needs a rest, please join me in getting a jump on my winter whining: Winter Cruising the Blues Away.

And now I’m on my way to check out your Can Ts. Comments here are always welcome.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere above about 39 degrees latitude are you getting mentally ready for winter?

Nice choice, to combine CanT with a Hollibaugh background.
I take my winter ‘cruises’ (by plane 😉 ) to Spain in january, to escape the winter for a week. This really does make the winter feel shorter!

The DO look like quilt patterns! Very pretty! Loved the cruise article:)

It’s a very versatile tangle, isn’t it? I like what you’ve done with it.

Even though it is the official end of summer it is just the beginning out here in San Francisco. Sept and Oct are always the warmest as the fog stays out at sea and the city by the bay basks under the uninterrupted sunshine.

Interesting. I never realized that about San Francisco. I’ve always been amazed sometimes how it can be quite cool in San Francisco and much warmer very close by.

❤️❤️❤️ Love it!

Thanks, Chris. Since you’re Can T’s “mother”, I appreciate your opinion. 🙂

It looks as if you really took to this pattern, which I didn’t. A good combination too.

As for getting ready for the Winter, yes, sort of, in so far as we are avoiding it by being currently on the west coast of France, then Lanzarote in October, Majorca in November a d Tenerife in December. Need the sun.

Sounds like a good plan. Get yourself south of 39 degrees latitude.

I like your tile. It reminds me of something you’d see under a microscope. 🙂

As for winter, I’m ready for it. Summers get way too hot here in OK for this girl that was born in OH, which gets too much snow and cold weather for my liking. 😉

I guess you need to find a climate that’s just right. Check out San Diego. Then all you have to deal with is the traffic. 😉

very nice tile! Great composition of tangles..

Great stippling and great to see Cant mixed with other tangles.

We’ve had the central heating on in the evenings for a week now. Summer has been so cold and wet here in Ireland that I don’t think we will notice the difference when winter arrives!!

Great tile. I like the circular samples. This was a really fun tangle to play with.

And Tim is right about the weather here in the SF Bay Area. It was 102-deg F yesterday at my house!

Ugh. 102 degrees and people in San Francisco are used to their natural air conditioning.

I had to laugh at your “hobbies armoire”. I think it equates with the saying, “you have to kiss a lot of toads before you find your prince”! I think a lot of people dabble in lots of different art/craft forms until they find their true love. I, myself, and quite fickle and am always drawn, like a moth to light, to “Ooh, shiny”! Love your CanT by the way 🙂

Suzanne, you never fail to make me laugh! I love reading your blog, especially the part about Canada keeping the polar vortex to itself. You sound just like my dad! That said, on to business…I love your CanT spheres. I can see you had fun filling in the background with the stippling and Amaze. I love a few minutes of mindlessness myself! Somehow your design reminds me of a blanket toss – two guys holding the corners and two flying up in the middle. Love it!

I love when September hits because the mornings instantly cool down and I don’t have to leave so early to go jogging. Last week it was 59 degrees in the morning and that felt chilly to me. I had to send my friend a text that said WINTER IS COMING!!! I’ve never been a fan of winter, but fall is quite nice. Probably my favorite season.

Love this, Suzanne. The circles start to round themselves off at the edges to an excellent effect!

Love the circles, Suzanne, and the whole post on the papal visit. Just know this: you will survive. And as for winter–we’re waiting for a cold snap here in Phreakin Phoenix. Anything less than 90 will do! Don’t get me wrong–we get winter, it’s just different! Have a brilliant day! c

I know we’ll survive, especially watching it all from New Jersey on TV.

So glad I don’t have to think about the winter and doing winter oriented activities. What a fun thing to have a pope visiting your city even with the hickups and crowds
