Zentangle Diva Challenge #333 – Tropical Storm José Go Away Edition

by Suzanne Fluhr on September 18, 2017 · 18 comments

After the sunset, Brigantine, New Jersey

(If Zentangle® is a new concept for you, start here.)

Today, Seattle area podcasters CZTs Juliette Fiessinger and Kellie Fellinge are guest Divas. I don’t know if they knew Hurricane José is heading this way when they challenged us to do a tile using tangles that are “Cozy” for this week’s Zentangle Diva challenge.

I don’t want anyone to think I’m whining even though I am.

Roiling surf on Brigantine Beach

The surf was already kicking up on Brigantine Beach this weekend even on a relatively windless day.

Compared to the horror Hurricane Irma visited upon Florida, Barbuda, Saint Martin and the US Virgin Islands, tomorrow will be nothing but a rainy, windy day here “down the shore” in southern coastal New Jersey.

By the time he arrives at this latitude, José is predicted to be down to a tropical storm and be 250 miles off shore.

We had the good fortune to miss most of the damage inflicted on this shore town when Super Storm Sandy made landfall right over this barrier island in 2012 — except for my rather inelegant tumble while checking out the storm damage elsewhere on the island.

José’s rip currents won’t be crimping my surfing style—because I have never surfed anything more challenging than the web in my entire life. Dino (the dog) and I will spend most of our time being “cozy”, except for braving the elements for an occasional walk.

I decided to go back to Zentangle basics for this challenge. I used 4 of my “Mac n’ Cheese” tangles. These are tangles that don’t stress me out and just flow from my pen at this point. I was hoping to keep it simple, but achieve some movement and depth. You can be the judge of whether or not I succeeded.

I started with this string:

Zentangle

And ended up with this, using the “official” tangles Paradox, Cadent, Printemps and a version of Tipple.

Zentangle Diva Challenge tile

This is my last week “down the shore” in Brigantine, New Jersey where I’ve had the good fortune to escape the muggy Philadelphia summer and “The Cave” as I affectionately refer to our Center City Philly condo.

I just purchased an LED lamp to help with the lack of natural sunlight in our main abode. It works well for me here at night, so hopefully, it will brighten the gloom there. That said, I will still miss the following Brigantine delights:

Sunflowers

I’ll miss other people’s gardens.

And this from our back deck in Brigantine:

After the sunset, Brigantine, New Jersey

I’ll miss “after the sunsets” like this.

What’s the worst weather event you’ve had to deal with?

A very elegant tile. I especially like the band of Paradox and your shining Tipples.

As you say goodbye to the beach and hello to winter, in Australia I’m doing the opposite. Very lucky in Canberra to get 4 full seasons – skiing in winter and going to the beach in summer. I like the string you used for this week’s challenge. I’m going to try it for myself when I start my diva tile shortly.

We’ve twice visited Australia without making it to Canberra. Next time!!

First: I am really happy for you that your son is safe!!!!
I like your “mac n’cheese” tile, that’s the whole idea of this challenge isn’t it?
And the worse weather we had, you asked: here in the Netherlands the weather is not very fierce. But … it is very wet the last weeks. Last Saturday we had a ‘run’ for our hospice and I was ons of the 5 volunteers in the woods here for 3 1/2 hours, standing in the rain, really pouring RAIN. Brrr I was sooooooooo wet and sooooooo cold when I came home. But …. some money for the hospice is quite welcome 🙂

Yes, northern Europe certainly has some wet weather. Of course, that’s why it’s also so lovely and green. There are many US cities at near or below sea level that really should visit the Netherlands to see how you control flooding.

Always nice to play with our favorite tangles. So sad that it is the end of “down the shore” season. I would still go, if I could, even in the winter.
The worst we had here in the Phoenix area was a tornado (although it was never called that = bad for tourism) that ripped our fence out and tossed it across our yard. Some people had their roofs blown off. This was at least 40 years ago though and nothing much else has ever occurred in our area. That’s one of the reasons I love living here. We really don’t have to worry about much of anything, except maybe burning up in the summer, LOL!

But, it’s a dry heat. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I can imagine how comforting it was to draw that tile. Those are some of my mac ‘n cheese patterns too;-) Sunflowers make me happy. Thanks for that.

I love your tile and going back to basics for “cozy”. Lovely!

I like your string too and I think I will use it for my next Challenge tile. Well you know what the weather is likely to be here – dull, dull, dull. And damp. However, we’ve just had a lovely week of 26-32 degrees in Tenerife, walking along the seafront or swimming in the pool. It’s not adventure but it is so relaxing.

Nothing wrong with relaxing travel.

Staying cozy during a tropical storm sounds like a good idea to me! I love the string on your diva tile, Suzanne.

Cozy tangles and cozy tile! Love the variation of Tipple!

I love the string you used, and your mac n’ cheese tangles fit beautifully. The worst weather event in my life was Hurricane Fran, in September of 1996. Even though we were 200 miles inland, we got the full brunt of its punch, and our wooded life was turned upside down. Nature has a way of letting us know who’s boss, doesn’t she?

Your diva tile reminds me of a crossroads…take the path less chosen, like good ole Robert Frost. 🙂

Love that sunset over the water pic. The worst weather for me was the blizzard of ’03 that closed the road, and we were ON IT…we did get to the next stop, a little roadside dive, which is where we were told we would not be able to go on. We crashed on the floor of a local ward house (LDS church building)…that was “the worst storm in a century” for our area anyway.

That back deck picture is absolutely AH-MAZE-ING!! I love the closeup of the sunflower, too. What great pictures. I love that you have a beach get-away. I am going to check into an LED lamp. I know everything is going toward LED – and of course, I have a metric-TON of regular light bulbs. My parents hoarded (as did I), so between their supply and mine, I’m set up until the Apocalypse!
