Zentangle Diva Challenge #339 – My “Bullet Journal” Halloween Edition

Today is Halloween. Bah Humbug (oh wait, wrong holiday).

We live in an apartment and both our sons are grown and flown so Halloween is basically a “nothing burger” around here. However, the Zentangle Diva challenge this week is to compose something to represent fall or Halloween. In order to avoid having to make a decision (it’s that kind of a day), I did a little of both.

Yes, I know it’s still October. My composition says “November” at the top of the page because it’s a fronts-piece for the month of November in my “bullet journal”.

I’m sharing both the black and white and the color versions. I didn’t shade the black and white because I decided it would look better in color. What do you think? You notice the pumpkin peeking out in the top tile? That’s my shout out to Halloween. Weak. I know.

What (You May be Thinking) Is a Bullet Journal?

PS: If you’re not thinking “What is a Bullet Journal?”, you can just skip to the end.

A “Bullet” journal has nothing to do with the Second Amendment. It’s an analog (pen and paper) system for keeping track of one’s life. The concept was developed by Ryder Carroll, a digital product developer of all things.

Don’t get me wrong. I am truly devoted to my smart phone and I still use my digital calendar religiously, partly because it’s a way for Mr. Excitement and I to keep track of each other’s schedules in real time. However, for everything else, I found I had little scraps of paper laying about with my things to do, things to remember, planning notes, lists, and musings. So, when I came across CZT Charlotte Carpentier’s Bullet Journal referenced in one of her blog posts, I researched the topic and decided to give the system a try.

A Bullet Journal isn’t really a specific “thing”. You can have a Bullet Journal in any type of notebook and you can set it up in a way that works for your particular life. For example, I’m intent on losing some pounds I gained over the summer, so I’ve put myself on a Weight Watchers’® point counting diet which requires recording what I consume. Therefore, I have a food journal section in my Bullet Journal. Someone who didn’t consume as much as ice cream as I did over the summer probably wouldn’t have a food record section in their Bullet Journal.

Bullet journal food journalAs you can see on my Bullet Journal Pinterest board, Bullet Journal’s can be a place to express one’s creativity, so mine is interspersed with free floating tangles and some Zentangle Inspired Art.

I started my Bullet Journal in September. I find it has a calming effect. I don’t go to bed trying to remember what I have to do and where I wrote something down.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a photo of how one Philadelphia phamily deals with witches. (Any similarity to the way Philadelphia Eagles’ fans treat visitors walking around in Dallas Cowboy regalia is probably purely coincidental.) Philadelphia witch

How do you celebrate Halloween? Do you keep any type of paper journal?

Been away too long, I have Suzanne. Good to see you are still challenge Tangling away. I love how warm and fireplacy and cidery your colored ones make me feel. Kida hard to Tangle Fall/Autumn without Gourdgeous, but oooohhhh so fun. Enjoy the spooks tonight (oh, you’re on the East coast so you probably already have. Our should be creeping about shortly. Love the planter.

I like the colored one most, Suzanne. Probably because we need warm colors in this time of year. Here in The Netherlands Halloween is hardly an issue, however it’s becoming more and more every year.

Your DIVA tile is a wonderful composition in warm autumly colors. I like the black and white version too, it looks very elegant.

For me it‘s the coloured version. I love the contrast between the rather muted colours of the pumpkins and the vibrant colours of your flux. Great composition! Heike

I like both of your autumn/Hallowe’en tangles.

Prone to* keeping track of things, including my own thoughts and ideas. I have long but sporadically had a written journal of sorts, first on-paper and then, after a two-decade hiatus while actively parenting children, online. Thanks to the inspiration of this post, I am going to try having an on-paper Bullet Journal to supplement my online journal. I’ll take a closer look at your Bullet Journal Pinterest Board to get started. I need to learn how to communicate with tools beyond words.

Since we live in a neighborhood of single-family homes with many young families, and we jump at any chance to be part of children’s lives, we really enjoy Hallowe’en. Last night was full of the sights and sounds of trick-or-treaters and their parents, as they showed off their costumes, enjoyed our simple treats and played with Bob, our child-loving Long-Haired Dachshund. So much delight and laughter…we loved it! Whether or not we ever become grandparents, children will always be a very important part of our lives.

*Sometimes, this edges too close to an obsession and must be curbed.

Let me know how a Bullet Journal works for you. BTW, “real” Bullet Journals are kept in bound journals, but mine is in a looseleaf so I can move things around. There’s a whole world of bullet journalers out there— on Pinterest, on Instagram, on Facebook and more than a few blogs. I’m finding that it helps me not worry about what I’m forgetting because it’s all written down in one place—and it’s also a bit of a creative outlet. Some people do beautiful artwork in their bullet journals. There are some examples of creative bullet journal pages on my Pinterest board.

Love those witches legs! Too funny!!! I have so many journals I need a Bullet Journal just to keep track of all my journals started but not finished because I grab a new one when I can’t find the previous one!!! I adore journals – leather ones, especially. Faux works, too. Is it me or does the bottom of the bottom tile look a wee bit like… fallopian tubes?? Bwahahahahaha. We shut the gate on Halloween now – living out of town like we do, no kiddies come by so I no longer have an excuse to purchase mass quantities of candy that I end up eating (I mean, why would I throw it away?) and having Alpha Hubby BLAMING me for his weight gain during the holidays. BTW I’m paying you back for your run-on sentence of months ago (snicker).

LOL. Now that you mention it, I do see the Fallopian tubes. I’m happy to say that I am now in a time of life when I don’t think much about my Fallopian tubes, so I hope my art is not Freudian or something.

I totally understand your journal addiction. I’m just generally addicted to office supplies. My bullet journal really has consolidated the many streams of things I have to do, plan and think about all in one place. Let me know how you like it if you give Bullet Journaling a try.

PS: I know some people hold grudges, but I’ve never heard of anybody waiting for their chance to get even for a run on sentence. 😉 I guess there’s a first time for everything.

I do like the color version of your tile or drawing or whatever you call it, Suzanne.

That “Witchy” picture looks So Familiar. I remember being asked where I would get the legs. I answered, “Oh well, I’ve got a year to think about it.” !! The Legs Actually Belong to Ol’ Tom Brady. His Ego also needs to be Deflated. !! Chiefs fans say it well. “There’s NO PLACE like Mahomes. !!

As you can imagine, Tom Brady isn’t the most popular person Philly.
