Zentangle Diva Challenge #289 – “Ahoy Thar” Edition

by Suzanne Fluhr on October 18, 2016 · 16 comments

Once again I was MIA for another week. This is becoming a disturbing unfortunate habit. I’m going to blame it on watching too much TV coverage of the United States’ election and thus becoming paralyzed with depression. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. After November 8th, I’ll have to come up with another excuse.)

I actually did do last week’s “gourdgeous” challenge, but working in reverse chronological order, I’ll start with this week’s challenge which, in honor of fall, was to do something leafy. Unlike last year, this year, I drew my leaves free hand. One is supposed to be a maple leaf—yes, the red one. OK Canadians, I can feel you rolling your eyes. I admit it looks suspiciously like a maple leaf with identity issues since it seems to be channeling an oak leaf.  We’ll call the yellow one an aspen leaf and the one with the greens is actually my Aloha tangle. They don’t really have a discrete fall in Hawaii, but they do have leaves. My leaves are dancing on a “knot” tangle. Can anyone help me remember the name, I can’t find it?

Then, here’s the Gordgeous gourds from last week’s challenge. This was supposed to be two gourds, but it looks more like one gourd with two necks—Siamese gourds?

And now, for the nautical reference in the title….. My Boomeresque blog post this week was about our visit to Maritime Greenwich in London, England last month. The Royal Park there, including some of the adjacent town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It you’re a sailing or history geek, you definitely want to visit there. And, if you’re a sailing history geek, you will want to spend more than a day.

As much as I would love for you to read my entire blog post about Greenwich, the vast majority of you most of you won’t, so here are a few photos to show you what you’re missing.

Sir James Thorton's murals in the Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College

Some of Sir James Thorton’s murals in the Painted Hall of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Chapel of the Old Royal Naval College at dusk in Greenwich, England

The Chapel of the Old Royal Naval College at dusk.

And finally because apparently I’m not ashamed to share goofy photos of myself……

Straddling the Prime Meridian at the Old Royal Observatory in Greenwich, Engalnd.

I suspect I’m not the only person with a photo of themselves straddling the Prime Meridian with a foot in the east and west hemispheres at the Old Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England.

Have you ever visited Maritime Greenwich? Have you ever straddled a border anywhere? Please admit if there is a photo of yourself doing so. 😉

Both tiles are beautiful. I think the tangle is called Skye. I had a lot of trouble with it when it was a challenge a while back and never actually did a tile. Will have to try it again.
I’m with you. I can’t wait til this election is over!

The tangles are beautiful, challenged maple leaf, dual-neck gourd and all:) Ans I very much loved the tour of Maritime. As to this current political zoo, the real losers are the American people. And that is the shame of it.

I love your beautiful autumntile with your lovely drawn Aloha, such nice colors you have used and you did also a good job on the” Gourdgeous tile”.
In Europe we also follow the elections in the States but I don’t like the “circus” they have made of it. The political system in the U.S.A. is very different from ours and it is hard to understand why Trump has come so far…
I have never visited Maritime Greenwich but I think it is very funny to take a picture on that Meridian, you look very nice and happy!

I actually read your entire Greenwich post, which means that I am entitled to Boomeresque Bonus Points. (My spell-checker, by the way, fails to recognize Boomeresque as a word. But once this blog has millions of readers world-wide, that will change!)

Call me when you find “Boomeresque” in the Oxford English Dictionary—unabridged edition.

Love the leaves and agree, the gourds look like two necks – but still pretty darned awesome. I read all your posts all the way through so do I also get brownie points?? Oooo, brownie – I need to go make some right now….

I love your beautiful leaves dancing along on Skye (yes, I remember that as the name of that one too). They dance in a very 3-dimensional world. And your Gourdgeous tile is great. I like the idea of them being Siamese Gourds. 🙂 Beautifully done.

Well, Suzanne, we can commiserate together on the state of American politics. I, too, have been watching the news coverage and wondering how things will end up for us. The whole thing is making me very depressed as well. Thank heaven for tangling! Your autumn leaves are so brilliant and colorful…I missed the ones in the mountains here in Utah because I was a bit under the weather and so didn’t get up the canyon as I had hoped, but my vine in the backyard had the most brilliant red leaves on it. I loved looking out the back door as I was either drawing or on the computer. And I am pretty sure that the tangle in question is Skye by Margaret Bremner (sp?). I love the way your leaves are dancing on it. And you gourdgeous IS gorgeous! Yes, it does rather look like a mutation with two heads, but it is such a lovely piece with all that color and fabulous tangling. Thank you for sharing both your artwork and your pictures. I will go back and read your Greenwich blog after I wake up…it’s about 3 am here now and I think I should head to bed. Thanks for sharing Suzanne!

Those leaves are quite pretty and the Gourdgeous is nice too. When my friend and I were young and had an argument, we would draw a line on the sidewalk to show which side of the world was hers and which side was mine. Does that count? No photos though LOL!

Hmm. I can remember creating several such borders when I shared a bedroom with one or another sister. My husband and I draw a line when we share desserts because he eats much faster than I do. 😉
