Zentangle Diva Challenge #265—Scottish Stripes

Edinburgh Castle

[New to Zentangle? Start here.]

This week, the Zentangle Diva challenged us to tangle stripes. I did my challenge tile after traveling all night and all day from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the USA to Edinburgh, Scotland via Dublin, Ireland. It’s not my most exciting nor creative work, but it wasn’t very taxing which is what my brain needed.

Last week I celebrated my birthday. (I won’t tell you which one except that it’s one consistent with eligibility for early Social Security benefits). One of my best presents was that Linda Farmer of TanglePatterns.com saw fit to publish one of my tangle deconstructions, Aloha, and she had no idea it was my birthday.

Today we explored Old Town Edinburgh. Tomorrow, we’ll be up early to start a tour that takes us to the Isle of Skye through the Scottish highlands. So far, we’ve been very happy that we brought our winter coats and umbrellas. It’s true what they say about Scottish weather—that you can experience all four seasons in one day.

I’ll leave you with this photo of Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Royal Mile.

Have you been to Scotland? If so, what can you share about your experience. If not, would you like to go?

First of all congratulations for your birthday and for Aloha, yes having an own tangle that is really exiting! And Aloha is very nice.
I hope you have a wonderful time in the Highlands. On the island of Skye there is a very nice shop (not cheap) but they had beautifull cardigans, made by hand, when I was there, the name of the shop is Ragamuffin. I hope you have a bit luck with the weather, Skye has an amazing scenery.
And about your tile: I like the stripes, coming from different directions, the contrasts you have created and the tangles (and variations) you have chosen for this challenge.

Nothing to grumble about with the tile – it looks really good. I was thinking, how many Diva Challenges have you done now? Have you ever gone back and looked at the early ones? I do now and then. That’s when I know I’ve made at least a little progress.

Wow, I’m amazed you took the time to construct such a delightfully detailed dynamite deliberation of decided beauty while exploring Scotland. That sounds like a true dedication to Zentangle. Your tile is sooooooo fun to look at.

Thank you for the alliterative comment. I did the tile the night we arrived in Edinburgh. After a night and day of travel, I was happy to unwind with Zentangle.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! Me, too, age-wise. Somewhere near where they used to retire people. I’m not telling because it is a none-ya number. None-ya beez wax. I would love to go to Scotland. I think I will have a little chat with Alpha Hubby!!! Another pretty zen tangle (to me).

Definitely have the Scotland chat with Alpha Hubby. It’s beautiful. We have only run into nice people so far and the scenery can leave you breathless—-in a good way. Actually, it’s not just the scenery. It’s also the clouds.

After Philadelphia, Edinburgh is a favorite city. Two “small” Museums which are NOT to be missed are the Museum of Childhood and The Writer’s Museum. Both are on the Royal Mile and if you are walking toward Holyrood Palace there is a Ragamuffin store on the right. I think The Writer’s Museum is just a wee bit off the Royal Mile. I stumbled across the museum my first trip there (long before the Internet days) and to this day is one of my favorites. This is one place where you want to look down – they have all these wonderful sayings in the pavement. Enjoy and Happy Travels and Birthday!!

We also went into the Writer’s Museum on our Context Travel walking tour of Edinburgh. I saw that Robert Louis Stevenson was one of the featured authors and I wanted to prove to Mr. Excitement and our tour guide, that he spent time in Hawaii. I was right!

I do love your new tangle, Suzanne. I have not been to Scotland, and not being much of a traveler, I never will. It is nice to see your photos and enjoy the travels without having to leave the safety of my home though.
I don’t think you could get too fancy with a simple challenge like stripes. Well, I guess some people could LOL!

I haven’t had wifi again until just now. I’m sure I’ll be blown away by all the beautiful compositions came up with for a simple challenge like stripes. BTW, there’s nothing wrong with armchair travel and thanks to the internet, you can even follow along in almost real time if you have a Zentangle/travel blogger peep. 🙂

I like how your tile came out. I congratulate you for creating such a wonderful work of art after all that traveling! I hope you’re having a great time! If it rains, well, that’s just part of Scotland from what I understand. Embrace whatever happens and just enjoy the now. Have fun!

We are doing our best to embrace the weather. In fact, whenever we travel we remind ourselves to do just that. Actually, the weather we have experienced is quite extraordinary (maybe not for Scotland). 4 seasons in one day—-or in one 15 minute period. It makes for fabulous skies.

I love your Diva piece. It’s like a great sampler of ribbon patterns. Congratulations on “Aloha”. I love that pattern.

Aha! You’re now in the same realm as my dad! He is (still) doing his PHD in Edinburgh.

I am v. envious. In fact, I wish I could be anywhere but here!!

Lovely diva challenge…congrats on having Aloha published on tanglepatterns.com! It was so much fun to play with when I first found it here…meanwhile, looks like fun in Scotland. I’d travel more, but that means packing and planning and leaving home, and possible human interaction! ack!

have fun in Scotland, and safe travels!

Happy Birthday, Suzanne! I’m a bit farther along in the Social Security process (it involves medical and now I can get a job and make as much money as I want – assuming I WANT a job…). Whatever the number of candles, what matters is if you are having fun at the party! You always give me such a lift with your travel adventures! International travel is not very possible for us as my husband uses a wheelchair and most destinations are not accessible to him. Too bad, as we would love to see the world! So, we just take another trip to Las Vegas and enjoy the food from great chefs (think Keller, Puck, Batali…) and all the wine we can drink in a four-day span!
Your stripes tile is just what you needed – no big brain drain – just some fun tangling! I love it! It’s like a little sampler in a box. I love your comment above about the weather in Scotland. Actually, it sounds like my home town of Chicago – that four season thing happens often! Now I’m homesick…

Congratulations again on getting another tangle on tangle patterns. I have never been to Scotland. Have not really traveled much in the last ___ years ( you can fill in the blank. Is not as much as your age but it is double digits). You combined these well. I always enjoy looking at what people come up with for this challenge. There is so much room for variation.

I’ve often wondered… what happens when you are mid flight, tangling away and the plane hits turbulence? Does your hand jump? Are you able to “fix” the design or do you toss it and start over, which would seem painful. Or do you just carry on? Inquiring minds want to know. 🙂

Suzanne Fluhr May 11, 2016 at 12:09 pm

Theoretically, there are no “mistakes” in Zentangle—no start overs because in real life you have to fix your mess ups. Untheoretically (probably not a word), I’m much too tightly wound not to have some start overs. The truth is, when the captain puts on the seat belt sign, that’s usually a hint that it might be a good idea to put away my tangling supplies.
