Aloha – A New Hawaii Inspired Boomeresque Tangle

Updated August 4, 2017.

In my response to the Zentangle Diva’s challenge number 257, I used a tangle inspired by a pattern I saw on a recent trip to Hawaii. Several people who commented on my blog post suggested/requested that I do the step outs for the pattern. Since the wishes of my faithful readers are my command, here goes.

One person suggested I give it a Hawaiian name since that’s where I found the inspiration. Brilliant idea. This also saves me from my unimaginative habit of numbering my tangle deconstructions. So, instead of naming this tangle “Cuarto”, I’ve named it “Aloha”.

In modern day Hawaiian, “Aloha” is defined as both “hello” and “good-bye”. (For those of you who are etymologically inclined, you can read more about “aloha”, here.)

Here are the step outs for “Aloha” and some examples of ways I’ve used it.

Below, using Aloha on an “official” tile with the Zentangle method.

And, finally, getting fancy:

Check out Boomeresque’s other original tangles:  Phirst, Segundo, Tercero, Aurabead, and Shorely.

So, gentle readers, what’s your verdict on Aloha?

Aloha looks complicated but your step out is so easy. Very nicely deconstructed. I will look forward to giving it a try.

My verdict is ‘interesting’. I just gave it a go but don’t see how I can put my pic here….

Oh hey, I was so excited to see “Aloha” as today’s newest pattern on TanglePatterns.com!! I’m from Hawaii (and still live here), so I was like, “hey! That’s awesome!”

Thank you, Courtney. I didn’t even know it was on TanglePatterns today. I’ll have to go check and it’s my birthday—a nice present.

Congratulations on getting another pattern on tangle patterns. I like the simplicity of this and how you used broader and narrow lines to create it. I like the variations, especially the upper left. Your shading on this one also added a lot.

Happy Birthday Suzanne! The shape you have shared with us reminds me strongly of one of the varieties of Heliconias, of which we have many here in Far North Queensland in Australia where I live. I love them all for their shapes and vivid colours !

Strikingly beautifully elegant. Yeah. I’m a ’47 so I can totally relate to your perspective. Phirst is one of my favorites – many applications. Thanks so much.

Oh my Suzanne, I just bought the 2017 Edition of Linda Farmer’s Tangle Guide and stumbled across your “Aloha” tangle. Wow! I’ve been dreaming of creating a large, watercolored ZIA forest and considering the different organic patterns I might use and I guarandangtee you, Aloha will be prominently featured when the forest comes to fruition. Thanks.
